Job description
Role Overview
The Assistant Project Manager role supports Unilever Engineering projects and is based in Pondicherry/Amil. The position focuses on execution of industrial projects across factories and associated contract manufacturing locations, with strong emphasis on safety, contractor coordination, vendor management, and end-to-end project delivery.
Eligibility
Candidates should hold a B.E. or B.Tech in Mechanical, Instrumentation, or Electrical engineering and have 3 to 5 years of experience in supply chain, project execution, or engineering.
Key Responsibilities
- Build a detailed understanding of project requirements by working closely with the factory team and aligning execution with the project network.
- Lead day-to-day safety practices during implementation, including control of leading and lagging safety indicators.
- Apply construction safety and commissioning practices while handling equipment start-up and site activities such as PTW, MOS, THA, SAM, and HI.
- Take full ownership of the project blueprint and manage the project efficiently from planning through execution.
- Support factories with technical inputs and coordinate effectively with multiple stakeholders.
- Manage contractors for mechanical work and handle workforce coordination at site.
- Oversee vendor management, preparation of BOMs, site installation, commissioning, and troubleshooting.
- Coordinate commissioning activities for equipment, tanks, vessels, machinery, piping, and steel structures.
- Use structured problem-solving tools such as Fishbone analysis, Why-Why analysis, and other objective methods to address issues.
- Prepare and present technical information in a concise, professional, and insightful way using MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, and Power BI.
- Work with agile methods in collaboration with diverse teams.
- Travel across HUL sites and associated contract manufacturing facilities as required.
Requirements
- Degree in Mechanical, Instrumentation, or Electrical engineering (B.E./B.Tech).
- 3 to 5 years of relevant experience in supply chain, project execution, or engineering.
- Practical understanding of construction safety and equipment commissioning.
- Hands-on experience in project management and mechanical contractor management.
- Experience in vendor coordination, BOM preparation, installation, commissioning, and troubleshooting.
- Strong analytical problem-solving ability using standard tools and techniques.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to coordinate between factory teams and suppliers.
- Capability to prepare clear technical presentations and reports using Excel, PowerPoint, and Power BI.
- Exposure to agile ways of working with cross-functional teams.
- Prior experience in contractor management and workforce supervision at site is required.
- Experience with packaging machines and automated warehouses/ASRS will be an added advantage.
