Job description

Role overview

The Department of War Education Activity is hiring an Assistant Principal for a high school in Ramstein, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. In this leadership role, you will help guide school improvement, support staff development, and coordinate with students, families, the community, and base offices.

Key duties

  • Analyze student achievement data and other related information to inform school improvement planning, teacher development priorities, and broader program changes.
  • Set educator performance expectations for DoWEA staff and carry out teacher evaluations.
  • Act as a communication link among school leaders, students, teachers, parents, community partners, and base offices.
  • Take responsibility for government-owned or leased property assigned to the school.

Employment conditions

  • Male applicants born after December 31, 1959 must complete the Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service.
  • U.S. citizenship is mandatory.
  • Pay must be routed through direct deposit.
  • A two-year trial period may be required.
  • Final appointment depends on a suitability and fitness review, including a background investigation.
  • A two-year supervisory probationary period may be required.
  • The role requires a Tier 3 (T3) investigation with childcare checks because it involves contact with children and youth under 18.
  • You may need to sign a transportation agreement.
  • You must agree to mobility requirements, be available for worldwide placement, and be willing to rotate to any DoWEA location.
  • Applicants recruited from the Continental United States and their U.S. citizen family members must obtain official passports before departing for the overseas assignment.
  • A secret security clearance is required.

Qualifications

Only U.S. citizens may apply. Candidates must satisfy both the education and experience standards listed for the role. Relevant experience can include paid work, unpaid work, volunteer service, National Service programs such as Peace Corps or AmeriCorps, and other professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, or social organizations. Application materials must clearly show qualifying experience, and transcripts are required if eligibility is based on education.

Education requirement

You must hold a master’s degree in Educational Administration or Educational Leadership, or a master’s degree with 30 semester hours of graduate-level coursework, of which at least 20 semester hours are in Educational Administration/Educational Leadership. Applicants with a valid, unencumbered, fully professional administrator license comparable to a DoWEA Assistant Principal credential, issued by a U.S. state board of education, a U.S. territory, or the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, may be treated as having met the semester-hour requirement for Educational Administration/Educational Leadership. Official undergraduate and graduate transcripts are still required.

Experience requirement

In addition to the education standard, applicants must have at least three years of successful classroom teaching experience, specialist experience, or other professional educator experience at the Pre-K through 12 level.

Foreign education

Degrees and coursework completed outside the United States must be evaluated before they can be accepted. Acceptable evaluation routes include assessment by the International Education Research Foundation, use of a foreign institution recognized by an accredited university or state education department for teacher certification purposes, or review by the graduate division of a regionally accredited university that determines the work is equivalent to U.S. study. Graduates of non-accredited institutions may validate undergraduate study by being admitted to graduate school and completing at least 5 semester hours at a regionally accredited graduate college.

Additional information

  • Applicants must meet Exceptional Family Member Program requirements.
  • Applicants must be U.S. citizens and must not be considered ordinarily resident under the relevant Status of Forces Agreement. Ordinary resident status depends on host-nation rules and length of stay, among other factors.
  • If family members have special medical needs, applicants should confirm that those needs can be met before accepting an overseas assignment. Military treatment facilities may not be available to civilian employees except on a space-available basis, so host-nation facilities may be the only option.
  • Employees and family members needing medical or dental care overseas are responsible for arranging and paying for that care.
  • Access to military medical and dental treatment facilities for civilians and their families is space-available and reimbursable only.
  • Medical and dental care may be provided by host-nation providers, with availability and quality varying by location.
  • Family member appointments end based on the sponsor’s rotation date and may not extend beyond two months after the individual is no longer a family member in the local commuting area due to PCS, divorce, or, for a child, reaching age 23. Family member preference applies only if the family member physically resides with the sponsor.
  • Selectees recruited from the United States may be eligible for foreign-area benefits such as Living Quarters Allowance, government quarters, home leave, and similar allowances, subject to approval and applicable rules.
  • Selectees recruited outside the United States will have foreign-area benefit eligibility determined at hire.
  • This position is outside of any bargaining unit.
  • Laws or international agreements in the host country may affect the ability of a same-sex domestic partner or spouse to accompany the employee and receive certain benefits.
  • Applicants with disabilities who need a reasonable accommodation during the application or hiring process should contact David Walton.
  • Candidates are expected to support a more efficient federal government, value American republican ideals, and uphold the rule of law and the United States Constitution.
