Role Overview

Chronicle Books is seeking a dynamic and imaginative Assistant Editor to join their Art & Entertainment publishing division, which produces pop culture-driven books, calendars, and formats across diverse non-fiction genres. The team is known for its engaging, creatively designed, humor-infused, and commercially appealing titles featuring icons from Grumpy Cat to Dolly Parton. The ideal candidate will be a quick learner passionate about pop culture and trends, with many innovative ideas and a vision for making books compelling.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide editorial and project management support for a wide array of commercial books and formats, with emphasis on licensing partnerships.
  • Act independently as project editor or acquire 6 to 8 titles annually including books, calendars, and formats.
  • Contribute to building a distinctive, innovative, and profitable publishing list by generating ideas, performing consumer research, and enhancing project value.
  • Develop and nurture industry connections, including authors, artists, licensors, packagers, and literary agents.
  • Maintain title schedules, evaluate manuscripts, input corrections, generate title memos for marketing, and monitor licensor approvals.
  • Research, assess, and respond to publishing proposals and present them in group meetings.
  • Generate profit and loss statements and deal sheets, organize and lead creative meetings, keep abreast of market trends, and collaborate with team members.

Requirements

  • Minimum three years of experience in publishing with strong project management capabilities.
  • Keen interest in licensing and solid copywriting and written communication skills.
  • Capability to represent senior editorial staff effectively in meetings.
  • Ability to manage multiple detailed tasks simultaneously with strong attention to detail.
  • Self-driven with capacity to work independently and collaboratively within a team.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Hourly pay range from $27.41 to $31.50, determined by education, experience, skills, and location.
  • Participation in the profit-sharing program.

Work Schedule

Employees work primarily onsite in San Francisco following a hybrid schedule requiring at least three in-office days weekly, with flexibility up to five days based on project demands.
