Job description

Role overview

This position is for an Assistant Designer within THE ICONIC’s Own Brand team in Sydney, NSW. The role sits at junior to mid-level and focuses on helping shape product direction through innovation, creativity, and hands-on support across development processes.

THE ICONIC is a leading fashion e-commerce and lifestyle destination in Australia and New Zealand, known for combining customer insight, commercial thinking, and technology to deliver a strong end-to-end shopping experience.

The Commercial function works closely with Planning, Finance, Operations, and other teams to build customer-first ranges, improve forecasting, and support strategic decision-making across the business.

What you’ll be doing

  • Support the delivery of company-wide strategy and key objectives.
  • Work closely with manufacturers so product developments are handed over smoothly and sample technical packs are accurate, complete, and submitted on time.
  • Stay in regular contact with the Design team to flag and resolve important design or development issues.
  • Choose, source, and develop fabrics, colours, trims, and related materials in line with company standards.
  • Attend fitting sessions and use technical knowledge to help achieve the best fit, approving final samples with garment technicians when needed.
  • Assist with sample handling, technical packs, and technical drawings.
  • Contribute to trend research and forecasting.
  • Review and approve final product details to ensure they match the original design brief.
  • Understand the supplier’s manufacturing structure to identify cost and production opportunities for each design.
  • Take part in range planning meetings to keep the assortment balanced across style, colour, and fabrications.
  • Keep range boards current and organised according to planning needs.

What we’re looking for

  • At least 2 years’ experience in a design team with exposure to product development or design.
  • Background in print, fabric, and trim development.
  • Strong communication and negotiation abilities.
  • Good trend-spotting skills with a commercial understanding of fashion.
  • Ability to manage workload, prioritise tasks, and stay effective in a fast-moving environment.
  • Ability to use Illustrator and Photoshop; proficiency is considered an advantage.
  • Awareness of industry rules and compliance requirements.

Life at THE ICONIC

The company promotes a flexible, growth-oriented, and sustainability-minded culture where people are encouraged to do their best work and enjoy the process.

  • Flexible working arrangements, including a hybrid model.
  • Learning opportunities such as learning days, hackathons, and LinkedIn Learning.
  • Parental leave support plus an extra day off for a child’s first day of school each year.
  • Paid birthday leave and an ICONIC voucher.
  • Staff discounts and access to sample sales.
  • Fitness Passport and wellbeing programs.
  • Employee Assistance Program for employees and their families.
  • Volunteer days through a charity partnership with Thread Together.
