Job description

Role overview

The City of Beaverton is hiring an Assistant City Attorney 1 to support the City Attorney’s Office. The role centers on handling public records requests and subpoenas, identifying applicable exemptions, and helping protect the city’s legal interests. It also involves legal research, drafting and reviewing documents, support for procurement and public contracting, and acting as a backup prosecutor in Beaverton Municipal Court.

Key responsibilities

  • Search for and evaluate records connected to public records requests and subpoenas, then determine the right exemptions or objections to apply.
  • Work with staff members and provide guidance on public records and subpoena-related matters.
  • Prepare, review, and update contracts, agreements, deeds, ordinances, resolutions, and memoranda so they align with federal, state, and local legal requirements.
  • Consult with senior attorneys and advise city personnel on legal issues tied to their authority, responsibilities, and obligations.
  • Deliver legal instruction and training to city staff on topics such as public records, public meetings, and ethics.
  • Serve as a backup prosecutor for criminal and non-criminal matters in Beaverton Municipal Court, including reviewing police reports, selecting charges, negotiating outcomes, drafting motions, trying cases, filing post-conviction show cause orders, and maintaining records in the electronic case management system.
  • Support civil litigation work by drafting pleadings, motions, and briefs, and by participating in discovery, mediation, arbitration, and administrative hearings.
  • Attend public meetings and provide legal advice to governing bodies.
  • Help foster a workplace that is positive, inclusive, collaborative, and aligned with the city’s values and strategic goals.
  • Carry out additional duties described in the Assistant City Attorney 1 class specification.

Qualifications and requirements

  • A law degree from a fully accredited law school, or an equivalent mix of education and experience that allows the person to perform the essential duties of the role.
  • Active membership in good standing with the Oregon State Bar, or the ability to secure membership within 60 days after hire.
  • Ability to pass reference checks and education verification.
  • Ability to meet background check requirements, including CJIS fingerprinting.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screen.
  • Within 30 days of hire, the selected candidate must obtain CJIS certification.
  • Applicants with non-traditional backgrounds and experience are encouraged to apply, even if they do not meet every qualification listed.

Compensation and benefits

The monthly pay range for this position is $7,350.42 to $9,851.25, which is approximately $88,200 to $118,000 annually. Starting pay is determined by relevant experience and Oregon Equal Pay Act guidelines. Candidates meeting only the minimum qualifications generally begin at step one, while those with clearly additional directly related experience may be placed at a higher step within the range. Applicants are encouraged to include all relevant work history, including part-time, volunteer, and other related roles, so their experience can be evaluated accurately.

Regular employees receive a broad benefits package that includes full PERS retirement contribution coverage, access to a deferred compensation retirement plan, public service loan forgiveness support, tuition reimbursement, health/dental/vision/life insurance, generous PTO, PTO cash-out options, wellness programs and incentives, an employer-funded HRA VEBA, an Employee Assistance Program, and bilingual pay premiums.
