Job description

Role overview

If you have a strong interest in art, collections, and cultural objects, this role offers a pathway into a specialist career in valuation and art risk consulting. It is a rare chance to build expertise under the guidance of an experienced Principal Valuer.

This position is based in Auckland and offers a hybrid work setup, combining virtual work, time in the Auckland office, and site visits to collections throughout the region.

About the company

Aon focuses on helping people and organisations make better decisions. The company works to protect and support the lives of people around the world, and its teams are built around trust, inclusion, and a shared commitment to helping colleagues and clients succeed.

What you will do

You will work alongside the Principal Valuer and contribute to the valuation process from start to finish. The work covers fine art, decorative arts, collectibles, and specialist collections. The role involves research, fieldwork, client interaction, and report preparation.

  • Support the preparation and delivery of valuations for insurance, financial reporting, and asset management purposes
  • Carry out market research and analysis to support valuation findings, and collect, check, and confirm information about artworks and collections
  • Participate in collection inspections, condition documentation, site visits, and meetings with clients
  • Help prepare professional valuation reports and art risk consulting recommendations that assist clients in protecting and managing their collections
  • Develop strong working relationships with clients, brokers, collectors, and other industry contacts while supporting them through the valuation process

Why this role stands out

Opportunities in art and collections valuation are limited, making this a distinctive entry into a specialised and rewarding field. You will receive one-on-one mentoring, practical exposure, and structured training while working with private collectors, corporate clients, insurers, brokers, and institutions.

As the specialist team continues to grow, you will have increasing responsibility for valuation assignments and client relationships over time. This role is ideal if you want to combine art, research, consulting, and relationship management in one career path.

Skills and background

The ideal candidate may come from art history, museums, galleries, auction houses, collection management, valuation, or insurance. A background in these areas is helpful, but the most important qualities are curiosity, willingness to learn, and the drive to develop specialist knowledge.

  • Strong interest in art, collections, and cultural objects
  • Analytical thinking and solid research capability
  • Careful attention to detail
  • Confident written and verbal communication
  • Ability to work well with clients and stakeholders
  • Good organisational and time management skills
  • Comfort handling several projects and deadlines at once
  • Team-oriented and professional working style

Additional notes

This opportunity is described as a hybrid role in Auckland, with both virtual work and office-based work, as well as travel to collection sites across the region. Experience in valuation or insurance is useful but not required.
