Job description
Role overview
Central Otago District Council is seeking an Aquatics Supervisor to join the Alexandra Pool team on a permanent, full-time basis. Alexandra Pool is a busy year-round community facility that caters to lap swimmers, families, and learners. With one of the current supervisors moving on to an overseas adventure, this opening offers the chance to take on a pivotal leadership position.
This is a front-facing role where you will be present on the pool floor, making day-to-day decisions, guiding the team, and helping create a safe, welcoming experience for every visitor. The position also offers the opportunity to help shape a two-supervisor leadership structure that will influence the facility’s performance and standing in the community.
Key responsibilities
- Share responsibility for the smooth running of Alexandra Pool as part of a two-supervisor team, including staffing, roster planning, and operational decisions during shifts.
- Guide, support, and develop pool crew members across all shifts while fostering a positive and high-performing team environment.
- Make sure PoolSafe requirements and all health and safety obligations are consistently followed.
- Take charge of incidents and emergencies with steady, effective leadership.
- Keep water quality, cleanliness, and overall facility presentation at a high standard.
- Assist with swim school delivery, aquatic programmes, and broader initiatives across the aquatics team.
- Provide professional customer service and respond appropriately to enquiries and feedback.
- Work in close partnership with the Aquatics Manager on facility performance and future planning.
What we're looking for
The ideal candidate will bring hands-on experience in an aquatic or leisure environment, along with the confidence to lead people and respond decisively under pressure. Strong communication skills, a calm manner, and a supportive, professional attitude are important for success in this role.
Requirements
- A current Pool Lifeguard Practising Certificate (PLPC), or the ability to gain one.
- First Aid certification covering Unit Standards 6400, 6401, and 6402, or an equivalent qualification.
- Background experience in an aquatic or leisure facility.
- Well-developed leadership and communication skills.
- Confidence in making decisions and handling emergency situations.
- A positive, professional, and encouraging approach to teamwork.
- The ability to stay calm and act decisively when pressure is high.
Benefits
- Flexible working arrangements.
- A workplace that welcomes dogs.
- Access to an active social club.
- Opportunities for learning and professional development.
- A supportive team culture.
- A wellbeing programme.
- Additional leave.
