Role Summary
The Disability Appeal Specialist reviews denied disability claims and completes an independent, fair, and detailed file assessment. The role involves checking claim accuracy by examining plan terms, services delivered, historical records, and supporting data, while following State Regulations and ERISA requirements.
This position calls for strong investigative ability, careful analysis, and a detail-oriented approach to ensure timely and accurate decisions. It also requires gathering facts during the review process, using appropriate resources, and working closely with appeal team members, team leads, and claim resources.
Key Responsibilities
- Review disability claim files thoroughly, taking into account policy provisions, payment history, plan restrictions, clinical records, and relevant guidelines.
- Handle a caseload across multiple systems and issue decisions within ERISA timelines.
- Draft clear, accurate, and timely written communication for claimants and policyholders when needed.
- Work with teammates to manage workload efficiently using a “once and done” approach.
- Complete other related duties and assignments as required.
Required Qualifications
- 3 to 5 years of disability claims experience, with a preference for appeal handling.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to prioritize work effectively.
- Comfort handling multiple tasks at the same time.
- Ability to build and sustain strong working relationships with direct teammates and internal partners.
- High attention to detail.
- Openness to change and willingness to provide constructive feedback where appropriate.
Preferred Qualifications
- 3 to 5 years of experience in disability claims and appeal processing.
- Ability to work with and manage different web-based systems.
- Understanding of disability plans.
- Ability to perform well in a production-oriented environment.

Compensation
The expected base salary for this role is between $47,000 and $80,169 per year. The position may also qualify for annual short-term incentive pay and stock-based long-term incentives, subject to the applicable plan terms.
