Job description
Role overview
This 12-month contract is with a major Canadian bank’s Payments Operations function, which is in the middle of a broad modernization initiative. The team is shifting reconciliation, exception handling, and settlement away from manual effort and toward automation, smarter workflows, and test automation across its payment platforms. The position supports a specific portfolio within a roughly 30-person operations group and sits at the point where payments expertise meets practical automation.
The ideal person understands how funds move through banking environments and can also build tools and processes that reduce manual operational work.
Key responsibilities
- Develop and refine automated workflows that support payment operations, reconciliation, exception handling, and operational controls.
- Create and sustain automated test scenarios and regression suites, including support for SIT, UAT, and reconciliation checks.
- Handle balancing and reconciliation across multiple payment rails such as EFT/ACH, wires, card transactions, real-time payments, ISO 20022 messaging, and settlement processes.
- Look into payment breaks and operational discrepancies, identify root causes, and set up monitoring that flags unusual activity earlier.
- Review operational and payments data to spot inefficiencies and automation opportunities, then build dashboards and reports that help guide decisions.
- Work with Operations, Technology, Product, Risk, Compliance, QA, and outside vendors to convert business needs into scalable solutions.
Required experience and capabilities
- 3 to 7 years of background in payments, banking operations, reconciliation, business analysis, QA/testing, or operational change/transformation.
- Practical understanding of payment lifecycles, including settlement and reconciliation across EFT/ACH, wires, card payments, real-time payments, and ISO 20022.
- Direct experience with process automation tools or scripting such as Python, SQL, Power Automate, Alteryx, UiPath, or similar platforms.
- Experience creating and executing test automation for SIT, UAT, and regression testing.
- Strong ability to analyze data and build reports and dashboards.
- Clear communication skills with the ability to explain technical and operational topics to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Nice-to-have background
- Experience working on large-scale transformation initiatives.
- Previous experience in a top-tier Canadian bank.
