Job description
About the Company
Hike Medical is developing a leading platform in musculoskeletal care by combining AI, robotics, and healthcare. The business operates through three main lines: an AI-powered vision system that converts a 30-second web foot scan into custom 3D-printed orthotics, an AI agent platform that streamlines the full DME process from pre-visit work to claims and revenue cycle management, and SoleForge, a vertically integrated 3D-printing manufacturing facility for custom medical devices.
The company sees custom insoles as the first step in a larger path toward bionics: AI-created, robotically manufactured orthotic and prosthetic devices at scale. It is already active with major national orthotics-and-prosthetics providers and is targeting a $50M run rate by the end of 2026. Hike Medical has raised $22M across Seed and Series A from investors with early backing in companies such as OpenAI, Anduril, and Mercury. The team works from a fast-moving, high-ownership office in San Francisco’s Rincon Hill area.
About the Center of Excellence
The Center of Excellence functions as the core knowledge hub for the organization. It manages the clinical and coding expertise behind every AI agent, creates guidance for each code block, defines evaluation criteria, shapes compliance policies, and supports the human-in-the-loop team. Roles in this group have a major impact on how quickly the company can expand into new device categories.
Role Overview
The AFO Designer is responsible for building and finishing custom ankle-foot orthoses and related lower-limb bracing based on clinician-issued work orders. Working to the standards set by the Lead 3D Designer, this person uses CAD/CAM tools as well as traditional fabrication equipment to create devices that meet dimensional and clinical requirements. This is a hands-on production role with strict quality expectations, where the finished work affects both patient outcomes and the strength of claim documentation.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Build custom AFOs, including solid, articulated, floor reaction, carbon fiber, and SMO designs, according to Hike clinical work orders.
- Use 3D scanning and CAD/CAM tools to convert digital patient models into device designs.
- Carry out thermoplastic and carbon fiber fabrication work such as layup, trimming, padding, and final finishing in line with Hike’s standards.
- Inspect completed devices to confirm they match work order specifications before they are shipped.
- Identify and escalate clinical specification concerns or material limitations to the Lead 3D Designer prior to fabrication.
- Keep production documentation accurate in Hike’s system, linking each device to the patient, work order, and quality review.
- Join design reviews and ongoing improvement discussions with the Lead 3D Designer and the clinical team.
Requirements
- At least 2 years of experience fabricating custom AFOs or lower-extremity orthotics in an O&P lab or clinical environment.
- Practical experience with thermoplastic and/or carbon fiber AFO fabrication, including draping, forming, trimming, riveting, and padding.
- Exposure to CAD/CAM workflows and 3D scanning is preferred, though a willingness to learn is acceptable.
- A strong eye for detail and the ability to identify dimensional problems before devices leave the floor.
- ABC or BOC certification is preferred, including candidates who are currently working toward it; relevant apprenticeship or lab technician experience may also be considered.
- Comfort working in a fast-paced production setting where quality requirements are strict.
Compensation
The salary range for this role is $70,000 to $105,000 per year.
