Job Overview

The Academic Advisor will manage a designated group of students, monitoring their academic progress to enhance retention and completion rates. This role involves delivering proactive advising to students identified as at risk, supporting prospective students without advisors, and addressing urgent student concerns. The advisor acts as a student advocate by collaborating with college staff and faculty to facilitate student persistence through graduation and resolving enrollment barriers. Responsibilities also include completing advising functions that assist financial aid, admissions, and enrollment processes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Offer academic advising to students within assigned academic programs and manage a specific caseload, helping with academic and career planning.
  • Utilize computerized degree audits to assist advisees.
  • Monitor student academic progress for assigned caseload throughout the semester.
  • Engage and communicate with students regularly, focusing on promoting success, retention, and graduation.
  • Make referrals to academic support services including tutoring centers and faculty members.
  • Recommend personal support services available on campus or in the community as needed.
  • Advise financial aid office about coursework relevance for Title IV aid eligibility.
  • Create Academic Plans for at risk students to assist in determining Title IV financial aid qualification.
  • Initiate and manage manual student schedule adjustments compliant with college and state policies.
  • Effectively handle requests for changes in student majors.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Psychology, Sociology, Student Personnel Counseling, or a related discipline.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to foster positive relationships with personnel at all organizational levels.
  • Highly organized with strong attention to detail.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including some evenings.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in higher education.
