Department
The John & Mable Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota, Florida, operates as a department of Florida State University.
Role overview
This position supports the safety, protection, and visitor experience across The Ringling’s 66 acres of buildings, galleries, and outdoor grounds.
Key duties
- Patrol assigned areas across the museum’s buildings, galleries, and grounds.
- Observe guest activity to help maintain the safety of staff and visitors.
- Ensure guests follow museum policies and procedures.
- Help safeguard the collection, buildings, and grounds from theft, vandalism, and other forms of damage.
- Respond to visitor questions in a friendly, service-oriented way and help create a welcoming atmosphere.
- Carry out routine checks of assigned spaces and report safety concerns, damage, needed repairs, and signs of water intrusion or leaks.
As-needed support
- Assist during emergencies by contacting the appropriate responsible person or department.
- Escort staff and guests when required.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED.
- Ability to remain standing and walking for extended periods.
- Ability to go up and down stairs.
- Comfort working in a range of weather conditions.
- Valid driver’s license, or the ability to obtain one before hire.
- Driver’s permits are not accepted.
Preferred background
- Prior experience in customer service.
- Experience working in a museum or nonprofit setting.
- Ability to foster a positive, welcoming environment for work and learning.
- Ability to stay calm and respond appropriately in urgent or emergency situations.
Pay and schedule
The expected pay rate is $15.45 per hour for a 28-hour workweek. Employees are eligible for an additional $5 per hour when assigned to special events.
The schedule is fixed every two weeks and is not flexible. Week 1 includes Saturday, Sunday, Tuesday, and Wednesday from 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM. Week 2 includes Friday, Monday, and Thursday from 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM, with an 8:00 PM clock-out on Thursdays when events are scheduled.

- This is an OPS/temporary position.
- A criminal history background check may be required depending on job duties.
- Work location is Sarasota, Florida.
