Job description
Role overview
VMD Corp is hiring a 1099 Background Investigator to support a nationwide background investigation program serving U.S. federal departments and agencies. The work centers on assessing whether individuals meet suitability standards for government employment, access to classified material, and other sensitive roles that require a formal investigation. Because the cases can involve highly personal information, the role demands professionalism, sound judgment, tact, and strict discretion. Information handled in this work is protected by the Privacy Act of 1974.
This opportunity is tied to a mission-driven, award-winning GovCon environment where investigators contribute to national security by producing clear, accurate, and well-documented findings.
Work location and clearance
The role may be performed remotely, in a hybrid setup, or on customer site. An active Top Secret clearance is required.
Responsibilities
- Examine completed background interview files for gaps, mistakes, inconsistencies, missing details, or possible false statements before starting the initial candidate interview.
- Carry out background checks by speaking with employers, colleagues, neighbors, law enforcement personnel, military members, family members, and personal references.
- Write thorough interview statements for each interviewee so a reviewer can reach reasonable and supportable conclusions about the candidate.
- Assemble and format investigative records for inclusion in the final results package, following established processing procedures.
- Draft concise summaries of any adverse findings by objectively evaluating background information and interview responses against FIS standards.
- Perform interviews either remotely or face to face, with the ability to travel as much as 50% of the time.
- Spanish language ability is considered an advantage.
Requirements
- Active Top Secret security clearance.
- Successful completion of the NTS Background Investigator training course and the required post-NTS mentoring.
- Willingness and ability to travel up to 50% of the time.
- Capability to conduct interviews virtually from home.
- Applicants who already hold active DHS credentials will receive preference.
