Role Overview
As a Wilderness Tour Guide at Icy Strait Point, you will lead safe, captivating, and educational outdoor excursions in the stunning natural environment of Hoonah, Alaska. This versatile position involves guiding kayaking outings, Jeep and ATV tours, as well as hiking adventures that highlight the local wilderness, history, and culture.
Responsibilities
- Adhere to the guiding principles of Icy Strait Point: delivering the Best, Authentic, and Profitable Cruise Destination experience.
- Lead a variety of adventure tours including kayaking, off-road vehicle tours (Jeep/ATV), and wilderness hikes with scenic interpretations.
- Provide engaging commentary about local wildlife, natural ecosystems, cultural heritage, and historical context.
- Communicate safety instructions and interpretive information effectively in English plus one additional language among Spanish, Cantonese, or Mandarin.
- Maintain guest safety through detailed briefings, close monitoring of environmental conditions, and strict adherence to operational safety procedures.
- Operate and oversee equipment such as kayaks, Jeeps, ATVs, and related safety apparatus.
- Support guests across varying skill sets by offering guidance, instruction, and encouragement.
- Adjust calmly and professionally to weather changes, wildlife encounters, and other outdoor variables.
- Ensure all equipment is clean, functional, and ready for use between tours.
- Participate in all required training sessions.
- Deliver superior guest service and represent the company with enthusiasm and professionalism.
- Carry out additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Possess robust outdoor skills and experience in paddling, off-road vehicle use, hiking, or equivalent outdoor activities.
- Bilingual proficiency in English and at least one of these languages: Cantonese, Mandarin, or Spanish is required.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to engage guests through storytelling.
- Capability to work effectively in diverse and sometimes challenging weather and wilderness conditions.
- Current First Aid and CPR certification, or willingness to obtain one promptly.
- Physical ability to handle and transport equipment as needed.
- Friendly, patient, and committed to prioritizing guest safety at all times.
