Wetland Biologist

About the Role

Ducks Unlimited, in partnership with the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), seeks a Wetland Biologist to advance wetland conservation and restoration throughout Indiana. The full-time position, based at a USDA NRCS Service Center in Northeast Indiana (locations may include Huntington or Ft. Wayne), focuses on delivering wetland conservation easements and managing Farm Bill conservation programs on private lands. This opportunity spans August 2026 through 2030, with possible extension depending on funding.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide technical expertise supporting the Agricultural Conservation Easement Program's Wetland Reserve Easement component.
• Guide private landowners in wetland restoration, enhancement, creation, and management activities linked to conservation programs.
• Conduct field visits to assess project feasibility, eligibility, and expected outcomes.
• Develop wetland habitat management plans that optimize plant communities, wildlife habitats, and ecosystem functionality.
• Apply knowledge of wetland ecology, hydrology, and vegetation in restoration and management recommendations, including tree planting, native grass establishment, and water-level management.
• Monitor restoration projects and assess conservation easements to measure effectiveness and explore improvements.
• Prepare necessary documentation such as Compatible Use Authorizations under the WRE Program.
• Collaborate closely with NRCS staff and conservation partners to maximize soil, water, and wildlife benefits.
• Promote participation in USDA Farm Bill programs and conduct outreach through workshops and trainings.
• Lead and assist with wildlife, plant, and wetland data collection and conservation studies.
• Support program administration through applications, contracts, reporting, and documentation, adhering to environmental compliance via NEPA guidelines.
• Provide training and technical support to field staff on biological and environmental matters.
• Analyze conservation data with GIS and other tools and participate in relevant meetings and training at various levels.
• Maintain and update knowledge on wetland science, conservation techniques, and innovative practices.
• Engage in professional development and foster innovation through technology adoption and outreach activities.

Qualifications and Skills

• Bachelor's degree in wildlife biology, ecology, conservation biology, agriculture, environmental science, or a similar field.
• Preferably two or more years of professional experience in wetland management, ecology, or natural resource disciplines.
• Familiarity with private land conservation techniques, habitat restoration, and Farm Bill programs is advantageous.
• Ability to work both in office settings and extensively in the field, including travel throughout Indiana and occasional overnight stays.
• Comfortable working outdoors in varied and sometimes inclement weather conditions.
• Proficient understanding of wetland ecology, hydrology, invasive species, threatened species, and wildlife habitat management.
• Knowledge of federal and state wetland regulations and environmental compliance requirements.
• Experience with habitat management plans, Microsoft Office, ArcGIS, GPS technology, and conservation planning tools preferred.
• Strong project management, organizational skills, and ability to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders.
• Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
• Capability to operate field equipment, including four-wheel-drive vehicles, UTVs/ATVs, and trailers safely.
• Valid driver's license and willingness to use a personal vehicle with reimbursement if needed.

Compensation and Benefits

Salary is commensurate with experience and education, typically starting between $54,360 and $56,000 annually.
