Position Overview

Based in New Plymouth, Taranaki, this full-time permanent role as a Trainee Network Controller offers a key entry point into the Network Control Centre at Powerco. It is both a standalone position contributing significant operational support from day one and a stepping stone towards progressing into a fully qualified Network Controller role.

Role Responsibilities

  • Analyze fault data to enhance response strategies and devise better solutions.
  • Assist in real-time management and operation of the high-voltage (HV) network.
  • Develop and verify high-voltage switching instructions to ensure safe and effective switching operations.
  • Examine complex electrical network situations and aid in resolving issues promptly.
  • Maintain accurate records regarding network outages, incidents, and events.
  • Ensure consistent compliance with Powerco's network operating policies and procedures.
  • Actively pursue competency development toward earning the Connexis Level 4 Network Controller Certificate, a nationally recognized qualification supported by internal assessors.

Candidate Profile

Applicants should hold either an electrical trade certificate (Level 4 or higher), a tertiary degree in electrical engineering or a closely related field, or have equivalent practical experience in the electricity distribution sector with solid electrical theory knowledge. Experience in electricity distribution is advantageous, but those with backgrounds as electricians, inspectors, line mechanics, or cable jointers are also encouraged to apply.

Key personal attributes include strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, excellent communication skills especially under pressure (for example during storms or unplanned outages), technological aptitude, and familiarity with electricity sector systems such as protection systems, SCADA, or Outage Management systems.

Commitment to Inclusivity

Powerco emphasizes the development of people and welcomes applicants from all backgrounds, including underrepresented and neurodiverse groups. We are dedicated to creating a supportive and inclusive environment where employees can thrive and bring their full selves to work.
