Position Overview

The Traffic Control Flagger is tasked with directing vehicular movement safely around construction and maintenance zones. Responsibilities include establishing and removing traffic control devices such as signs, cones, and barricades to protect workers and the public. Utilizing hand signals and signage, the flagger communicates effectively with motorists to facilitate safe navigation through or around work areas. This role demands careful attention to detail, endurance to work outdoors in varied weather, and the ability to stand for prolonged durations.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Deploy traffic control signs, cones, and barricades at job sites to reroute traffic safely.
  • Manage traffic flow using stop/slow paddles effectively and safely.
  • Maintain clear and consistent communication with colleagues using two-way radios during operations.
  • Stand and be physically active (walking and reaching) for up to 10 hours daily.
  • Lift, carry, push, pull, and transport equipment heavier than 50 pounds.
  • Operate company vehicles to deliver and retrieve traffic control materials at various locations.
  • Conduct routine maintenance and vehicle inspections ensuring operational readiness.
  • Work consistently outdoors exposed to weather conditions, traffic motion, machinery noise, fumes, and airborne particles.
  • Follow all company policies and procedures diligently.
  • Complete additional assigned tasks as required.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Possession of a valid driver’s license.
  • Successful completion of background checks, including motor vehicle record verification.
  • Passing of drug screenings and compliance with federal Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations.
  • Mandatory usage of personal protective equipment such as safety-toe boots, hard hat, safety glasses, and reflective vest.
  • Experience with operating two-way radio communication devices.
  • Readiness to work under diverse weather and traffic scenarios.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for clear communication with contractors and internal teams, delivering exceptional customer service.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within team environments.
  • Exemplary attendance record, reliable transportation, and a committed work ethic.
  • Completion of ATSSA Flagger training and company-led Defensive Driving course.
  • Willingness and ability to travel within the state, including occasional overnight stays, night shifts, weekends, and rotate on-call availability.
