About the Company
Notion is a collaborative AI workspace designed to bring teams and agents into one shared environment. The product unifies knowledge, projects, meetings, and AI tools so work feels more connected, faster, and easier to manage. It supports millions of users, from individuals and small teams to large organizations.
Employees are expected to lead by example as early users of the product and help build a future of work centered on strong craftsmanship, durable systems, and the idea that meaningful work remains fundamentally human. The company aims to do more than launch features; its teams work toward setting the standard for how people collaborate in the AI era, including systems of record, AI agents, and automation that removes repetitive work.
About the Role
In this position, you will contribute to major user-facing experiences and help people realize value in Notion more quickly. The work involves meaningful challenges with growing independence, writing software that reaches a very large audience, and making technical decisions on projects that matter. You will work closely with colleagues in design, product, and data to help define the product direction.
This opening is for a new graduate AI engineer who will support the company’s AI strategy. The role focuses on building with LLMs, embeddings, and related technologies to make the product smarter and more capable.
Potential Team Areas
- AI product engineering: delivering model-driven features from concept to launch, including interface design, APIs, retrieval, orchestration, quality, and reliability.
- Model and systems engineering: improving how models are integrated and optimized, including latency, cost, safety, robustness, and the infrastructure behind serving and experimentation.
- Evaluation and quality: developing evaluation methods and automated or human-reviewed testing to measure and improve both model and product performance.
What You Will Do
- Work with your team to prototype and release an AI-enhanced product improvement.
- Take ownership of a focused production project, such as adding a new model or technique to an existing workflow, introducing monitoring and safeguards, or improving speed, cost, or reliability.
- Help build evaluation loops by creating or expanding test sets, running experiments, reviewing results, and turning findings into product or system changes.
Qualifications
You should be pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science, engineering, or a related discipline, and must be able to begin full-time before July 27, 2026. Prior internship experience is required. You should also be actively developing proficiency in one or more programming languages such as TypeScript, React, or Python.
Skills and Working Style
The ideal candidate enjoys rapid building and iteration, and has already explored AI or machine learning through classes, projects, internships, or hackathons. You should be comfortable understanding how product components connect, including UI, APIs, and data, and have some familiarity with relational databases such as Postgres or MySQL. With guidance, you should be able to move an idea from prototype to working feature.
You should also be a structured problem-solver who can work through ambiguity, ask strong questions, break large problems into smaller pieces, and improve solutions based on teammate feedback. Clear communication matters, both in writing and meetings, along with comfort sharing early work, asking for help, and collaborating across engineering, product, design, and data.
A strong user mindset is important: the emphasis is on building the right thing, not only building quickly, with attention to user needs and product outcomes. Since the work may affect millions of users, thoughtful prioritization is essential.
Nice-to-Have Experience
Helpful extras include exposure to parts of the stack such as React, TypeScript, Node.js, or Postgres; a track record of building software for personal use or for others; and an interest in the relationship between technology and society. Familiarity with pioneers such as Ada Lovelace, Douglas Engelbart, and Alan Kay is also appreciated.
Compensation
For San Francisco and New York-based roles, the estimated annual base salary is between $126,000 and $146,000. Final compensation may vary depending on location, role scope, complexity, experience, and expertise. The company also states that it offers competitive cash compensation, equity, and benefits.
AI Mindset
The company expects employees to be curious, experimental, and comfortable using AI as a real collaborator in their work. Deep AI expertise is not required for every role, but when AI fluency is essential, it will be stated clearly in the qualifications. People who thrive in this environment use AI to think better and to help others build on their work more effectively.
Equal Opportunity and Accommodations
The employer is committed to inclusive hiring and welcomes applicants from a wide range of backgrounds. Candidates who meet most of the requirements are still encouraged to apply. Employment decisions are made without discrimination based on protected characteristics, and applicants with arrest or conviction records may be considered where permitted by law.
Reasonable accommodations are available during the application process for qualified individuals with disabilities and disabled veterans. If assistance is needed, applicants should inform their recruiter.
