Sergeant - Correctional Institution (Level 2)

Role Summary

Under the direction of the Shift Lieutenant, this position entails the comprehensive supervision of assigned security staff in housing units, along with oversight, custody, and control of all inmates housed therein.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

• Oversee subordinate security personnel assigned to housing units ensuring compliance with operational standards.
• Conduct routine inspections of living quarters to ensure adherence to security, safety, and sanitation protocols.
• Investigate allegations of misconduct involving inmates or security staff within the area of responsibility.
• Assist with formal and informal inmate counts.
• Monitor and evaluate security personnel performance, conduct, and appearance; prepare employee performance evaluations.
• Provide counseling, recommend disciplinary actions, and conduct training to maintain performance standards among staff.
• Complete required reports as necessary.
• Fulfill the duties of the Shift Lieutenant when required.

Training and Certification

Successful completion of an eight-week Basic Training at the South Carolina Department of Corrections (SCDC) Basic Training Academy is mandatory upon hire.

Minimum Qualifications

• A high school diploma plus eighteen months of experience in correctional, security, military, or law enforcement fields; alternatively, a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice or a related field may substitute for half of the required experience.
• Certification by the SCDC Training Academy and completion of the basic supervisory course within six months from appointment.
