Senior System Engineer

Job Overview

This position is a full-time role based primarily at our main office in Whangārei, New Zealand, with expectations to frequently visit client sites and some opportunities for remote work. As a Senior Systems Engineer, you will collaborate with Account Managers, fellow Systems Engineers, and other team members to create, implement, and maintain robust and scalable IT solutions that support both our clients and internal systems.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and deliver IT projects and system upgrades efficiently.
• Serve as the primary escalation point for complex technical issues, providing expert troubleshooting and resolution.
• Provide mentoring and technical guidance to junior engineers.
• Drive improvements in organizational standards, documentation, and technical procedures.
• Engage directly with customers, stakeholders, and vendors to ensure alignment and satisfaction.

Tasks Include

• Managing both short-term and long-term client projects from initial scoping through implementation.
• Designing and deploying solutions that comply with best practices and client needs.
• Participating in technical scoping, solution design, and implementation planning exercises.
• Resolving advanced infrastructure, networking, and cloud integration issues.
• Delivering operational support including SLA visits and day-to-day client troubleshooting.
• Documenting job notes, time entries, system configurations, and diagrams thoroughly.

Required Skills and Technologies

• Proficiency with Microsoft server products including Windows Server, Active Directory, SQL Server, Exchange, SharePoint, and Remote Desktop Services.
• Experience with Microsoft cloud platforms such as Microsoft 365 and Azure/Entra ID.
• Strong background in Windows desktop environments and Microsoft Office applications.
• Knowledge of virtualization and storage solutions.
• Competency in networking technologies, including firewall setups, switching, and Wi-Fi management.
• Understanding of IT security protocols, including backups, multi-factor authentication, and endpoint protection.
• Experience with hybrid cloud environments is highly regarded.

• A proven track record in senior or advanced system engineering roles.
• Strong problem-solving skills coupled with eagerness to learn new technologies.
• Ability to work independently, take ownership, and exercise sound technical judgment.
• Possession of a valid New Zealand driver’s licence is mandatory.
• Relevant industry certifications and formal training are beneficial but not essential.
