Role Overview
The Senior Manager Technical Services holds a critical leadership position responsible for guiding Engineering’s support functions including Design Organisation Approval (DOA) and fleet support, ensuring compliance with airworthiness standards and regulations while maintaining operational robustness. This role demands providing round-the-clock engineering leadership for handling aircraft operational issues such as repairs, modifications, concessions, and deferred defects, with a focus on elevating fleet performance by implementing predictive maintenance and reliability enhancement programs.
Strategic Accountabilities
- Craft and implement engineering strategies for the fleet to uphold safety, regulatory compliance, and enduring operational strength.
- Govern technical decisions and manage risks associated with fleet engineering.
- Advance fleet performance via coordinated engineering goals, initiatives, and key performance indicators.
- Forge and sustain strategic alliances with Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), Maintenance Repair Organizations (MROs), and other external collaborators to optimize fleet readiness and support.
- Enhance organizational expertise, nurture leadership succession, and develop cost-efficient fleet support approaches.
Operational Responsibilities
- Supervise and refine a 24/7 Technical Services team delivering engineering support across disciplines including Structures, Systems, Avionics, Cabin, and Reliability.
- Ensure prompt action for technical operational challenges, such as aircraft-on-ground (AOG) situations, deferred defect management, repairs, and modifications.
- Serve as the central engineering liaison with the Engineering Operations Centre, OEMs, MROs, and relevant parties during events affecting operations.
- Manage engineering approvals, deviations, concessions, ferry flight assistance, and activities related to the Minimum Equipment List (MEL).
- Oversee maintenance of technical quality, conformity with regulations, turnaround efficiency, and service delivery in all Technical Services functions.
- Implement effective communication strategies, including shift transitions and governance processes, to maintain fleet situational awareness and escalate issues appropriately.
- Collaborate with Airbus and Boeing fleet engineering groups to support ongoing reliability enhancements.
Fleet Support and Resource Oversight
- Create and sustain a versatile, multi-disciplinary fleet support workforce capable of adapting to operational demands, projects, and peak workloads.
- Develop resource prioritization methods to direct focus on critical operational and engineering tasks.
- Institute training and professional development opportunities to expand engineering expertise across multiple technical domains.
Design Organisation Approval (DOA) Leadership
- Oversee Qatar Airways' Part 21J DOA capability, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards and fostering strategic expansion.
- Manage external DOA relationships ensuring adherence to contractual service provisions.
- Promote growth of internal DOA competencies tailored for operational and business objectives.
- Ensure precise evaluation and reporting of damage to OEMs and other authorized design organizations.
Advancement of Predictive Maintenance
- Lead efforts to establish predictive maintenance frameworks within Engineering to proactively address maintenance needs.
- Transition maintenance operations from reactive approaches to proactive, data-informed strategies.
- Utilize predictive analytics and reliability tools to detect potential failures ahead of operational impacts.
- Coordinate with Supply Chain, MROs, and the Engineering Operations Centre to implement predictive maintenance actions effectively.
- Stay current with industry trends and novel technologies to uphold top-tier predictive maintenance practices.
Safety, Compliance, and Reliability Assurance
- Guarantee all engineering operations align with CAMO standards, regulatory demands, and internal policies.
- Track reliability metrics, identify systemic risks, and enact corrective solutions.
- Lead contributions to safety compliance, audits, and airworthiness continuity goals.
- Escalate critical reliability issues and back long-term corrective initiatives.
Continuous Improvement and Performance Oversight
- Drive initiatives for ongoing improvement via data evaluation, trend analysis, and causal investigations.
- Partner with Engineering and Operations teams to boost fleet availability, dispatch reliability, and efficiency.
- Establish, track, and communicate performance indicators that support departmental and organizational targets.
Leadership and Team Development
- Guide, mentor, and cultivate a high-caliber, multi-disciplinary engineering team.
- Build organizational strength through succession planning, talent growth, and knowledge transfer.
- Promote a culture emphasizing accountability, teamwork, innovation, and continuous progress.
- Encourage national talent growth programs by coaching emerging leaders.
- Ensure teams are enabled, aligned, and responsible for meeting performance and delivery goals.
