Position summary

The Senior Accountant reports to the Comptroller and plays a key role in month-end and year-end closing, annual audit support, and financial reporting for the Board of Education and the state. This role also oversees the annual audit process through completion of the district’s audit report, supports daily accounting operations, and helps establish and sustain internal control systems in coordination with finance professionals.

Core responsibilities

  • Complete timely reconciliations for general ledger accounts and banking transactions at month end.
  • Support month-end and year-end closing activities, including aging reports and key performance indicators where needed.
  • Help create, document, and monitor finance policies and procedures to ensure compliance.
  • Prepare management reports across general fund, fiduciary, proprietary, special revenue, and capital fund areas.
  • Lead the procurement card workflow, including checking that receipts are received, properly coded, and reconciled each month.
  • Oversee grant management, benefits processing, and capital asset accounting activities.
  • Review outgoing payments and incoming collections for accuracy and completeness.
  • Assist with physical inventory work for fixed assets.
  • Support processing related to student activities.
  • Work with internal and external auditors on control reviews, close processes, accruals, and process improvements that increase efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Coordinate with internal teams to keep internal controls strong and effective.
  • Provide recommendations and serve as a point of contact for internal audit reporting and related functions.
  • Act as backup support for payroll and assist with W-2 and 1099 processing.
  • Monitor and help supervise day-to-day accounting operations and workflows.
  • Train and cross-train team members on existing and updated procedures, performance standards, and expectations.
  • Carry out additional duties as assigned.

Education and experience

A bachelor’s degree is required. Candidates with 4 to 6 years of accounting experience are strongly preferred.
