School Bus Driver

Overview

The School Bus Driver is responsible for safely operating a school bus to transport school-aged children and authorized personnel. The role includes janitorial duties, supporting the organization's mission, and ensuring a safe, clean environment for passengers.

Key Responsibilities

• Secure all passengers properly before and during transport.
• Operate wheelchair lifts correctly to load and unload passengers needing assistance.
• Properly stow wheelchair equipment before moving the vehicle.
• Maintain positive relationships with passengers, activity centers, staff, and care providers.
• Participate in mandatory safety and first aid training and meetings.
• Transport children and staff from designated pick-up and drop-off points and to special events like field trips.
• Conduct daily safety and operational inspections of the assigned vehicle; submit vehicle condition reports.
• Maintain a safe environment on the bus by enforcing conduct rules and managing emergencies.
• Move furniture and supplies as required.
• Operate yard maintenance equipment and hand tools.
• Perform pre-trip safety inspections following federal and state laws, checking brakes, horn, lights, emergency flashers, stop arms, and door devices.
• Keep the vehicle clean and report mechanical issues promptly.
• Perform janitorial tasks at Head Start sites, including sweeping, mopping, dusting, vacuuming, and sanitizing using various cleaning agents.
• Travel as needed using personal or organization vehicles for work-related duties.
• Maintain regular attendance and punctuality.
• Work evenings and weekends as required.
• Carry out other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED.
• At least six months of relevant experience operating motor vehicles, with a valid commercial Class A or B license including Air Brakes and Passenger (P)/School Bus (S) endorsements.
• Minimum age of 21 years.
• Current CPR and First Aid certification.
• Proficient with two-way radio communication.
• Capable of driving safely in all weather conditions.
• Ability to read and follow maps.
• Basic janitorial skills and knowledge of cleaning chemicals and equipment.
• Available to work non-traditional hours and days as needed.
• Valid California driver's license, reliable transportation, and required auto insurance according to state and organizational policies.
• Pass pre-employment drug and alcohol screening and subject to ongoing testing.
• Successful background checks including medical exam and TB clearance, criminal record, DOJ fingerprint clearance, and child abuse index clearance.

Physical Demands

This role requires regular sitting, talking, listening; frequent walking, using hands; occasional standing, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling. Lifting up to 10 pounds frequently and up to 20 pounds occasionally is required. Visual abilities include close and distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment.

Work Environment

The job entails occasional exposure to outdoor weather conditions. Noise levels are generally moderate. Reasonable accommodations may be provided for disabilities.

Additional Information

• This position follows a split shift schedule: 6:00 AM to 9:30 AM and 1:00 PM to 4:30 PM, totaling 6 hours daily.
