Position Overview

Barrick Africa and Middle East is looking for a Safety Officer to expand our team in North Mara Mine, Tanzania. Key Responsibilities

  • Support the implementation of the North Mara Gold Mine Occupational Health and Safety Management System and ISO 45001:2018 standards.
  • Assist Safety Supervisor in ensuring compliance with company safety standards and legal health requirements.
  • Deliver visible safety support to all mine departments and contractors to ensure safe and efficient mining operations.
  • Help maintain the nine elements of Barrick Safety and Health Management System at the mine.
  • Ensure site equipment is maintained with rigorous pre-start checks, scheduling, and documented faults.
  • Facilitate risk assessments, job hazard analysis, and low-risk activity assessments encouraging a risk-aware culture.
  • Conduct regular safety inspections across all mining areas, including contractor facilities.
  • Assist with accident and incident investigations using approved methodologies.
  • Develop and deliver safety training tailored for mine staff and contractors.
  • Provide daily activity feedback to the Safety Supervisor and prepare timely safety statistics and reports on a weekly to annual basis.
  • Perform safety observations to monitor compliance with safety standards and personal protective equipment use, providing safety coaching as needed.
  • Collaborate with other departments to ensure integrated and efficient safety operations.
  • Participate in safety meetings, follow up on corrective actions, and review safety procedures regularly.
  • Foster teamwork and clear communication within the department and with visitors requiring technical safety expertise.
  • Undertake additional duties assigned by Occupational Health and Safety leadership.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree or diploma in Occupational Health System (OHS).
  • Certification such as NOSHC, NEBOSH, or Certificate III/IV in Occupational Health and Safety.
  • At least 3 years of mining experience covering open pit and underground operations.
  • Practical experience with Safety and Health Management Systems and ISO 45001:2018 standards.
  • Proven skills in accident and incident investigation and reporting.
  • Valid Tanzanian driver’s license with proven driving competency.
  • Strong communication skills in English and Kiswahili, both written and spoken.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Additional competencies include decisiveness, initiative, accountability, resilience, analytical thinking, multitasking, high interpersonal skills, and ability to work independently.
  • Membership in Emergency Response Team (ERT) is a plus.
