Position Summary
Seeking an independent or collaborative researcher capable of leading segments within a larger research initiative, primarily focusing on advancing deep learning techniques to identify plant species using Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) imagery. The role involves a two-year temporary appointment based in Boise, Idaho.
Role Scope
As a recognized expert, the Research Scholar will execute comprehensive responsibilities with minimal oversight, using advanced knowledge and experience to manage complex projects and influence institutional policies and procedures.
Primary Responsibilities
- Lead development of advanced deep learning algorithms such as convolutional neural networks, object detection, and semantic segmentation to accurately identify individual plant species from UAS imagery.
- Build, test, and maintain open-source software and interactive web applications facilitating species mapping from collected imagery.
- Handle extensive datasets consisting of georeferenced plant imagery across multiple western dryland ecosystems.
- Design solutions ensuring models generalize well across various landscapes, sensors, and conditions; assess predictive uncertainties for ecological interpretation.
- Collaborate with ecologists, statisticians, governmental scientists, and stakeholders from Boise State University and other partners.
- Publish impactful peer-reviewed articles and share reproducible research outputs supporting ecological studies and land management.
- Present research outcomes at diverse academic and stakeholder venues; travel between Boise and Burns, Oregon is anticipated.
Additional Duties
- Manage research or field equipment as necessary.
- Supervise and mentor students, postdoctoral researchers, and staff.
- Take ownership of specific project components under senior researchers' direction.
- Document research processes meticulously, adhering to data management standards.
- Analyze and interpret experimental results; suggest corrective measures when discrepancies arise.
- Evaluate and enhance research methodologies to improve quality and efficiency.
- Assist in proposal development, reporting, and classroom teaching tasks.
- Perform other assigned tasks as required.
Required Expertise and Attributes

- Proven ability to generate reliable and reproducible data aligned with scientific principles.
- Excellent scientific writing evidenced by peer-reviewed publications.

Minimum Qualifications
Doctorate or terminal degree in a relevant field with at least two years of postdoctoral or equivalent research experience exhibiting documented productivity. Alternatives considered include a Master’s with five years of qualified professional experience or a Bachelor’s with eight years of notable professional experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Expertise in species classification, object detection, semantic segmentation, or transfer learning techniques.
- Experience in drone-based image acquisition and processing.
- Familiarity with structure-from-motion photogrammetry.
- Background in geospatial data analysis.
- Skills in developing interactive web applications or scientific software.
- Interest or experience in dryland, rangeland, or plant ecology domains.
- Strong machine learning proficiency focused on ecological and environmental applications.
Compensation and Benefits
Annual salary ranges from $66,705 to $80,000, dependent on experience. Boise State University offers comprehensive benefits including:
