Job description
Position Overview
JoVE is looking for a seasoned Peer Review Editor to oversee the entire peer review cycle for submitted manuscripts. This role involves managing the reviewer process, ensuring adherence to scientific rigor, ethical standards, and reporting requirements, and delivering a positive, efficient experience for authors and reviewers.
Key Responsibilities
- Handle the peer review process end-to-end, including inviting reviewers, monitoring reviews, preparing editorial decisions, and managing revisions.
- Develop and maintain a robust and qualified reviewer database, tracking expertise areas and building relationships with top reviewers to facilitate timely and fair evaluations.
- Track review timelines and throughput metrics such as time to first decision and reviewer responsiveness; proactively resolve bottlenecks and streamline workflows.
- Work closely with Editorial and Production teams to ensure a seamless journey for authors from submission through to publication.
- Implement process improvements through the development of templates, automation tools, and dashboards to enhance review speed and quality.
- Maintain detailed and accurate records within manuscript management systems like Editorial Manager and Monday.com, including reviewer activities, decisions, correspondences, and policy exceptions.
Qualifications and Experience
- Possess a Bachelor's degree in life sciences or a related discipline; higher degrees are advantageous.
- Have over five years of experience in scholarly publishing with direct peer review management.
- Understand various peer review frameworks (single-blind, double-blind, open), open access publication models, and current trends in scholarly communication.
- Be proficient with manuscript processing systems, especially Editorial Manager, and comfortable using automation or AI-driven tools to improve efficiency.
- Exhibit excellent editorial judgment and written communication skills capable of distilling complex reviewer feedback into clear decisions.
- Demonstrate strong organization and project management skills, able to work productively in a deadline-oriented, dynamic environment.
