Overview
As a Night Train Cleaner at Northern in Leeds, you will play an essential role in ensuring our trains are spotless and safe, ready for passengers each morning. Working overnight, you will contribute to the upkeep of our fleet through a combination of routine and deep cleaning tasks. This position involves hands-on cleaning and maintenance in a safety-critical environment with adherence to strict standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform thorough cleaning of train interiors, including seats, tables, floors, windows, and frequently touched surfaces.
- Remove waste by emptying bins and clearing litter effectively.
- Replenish toilet supplies such as soap and toilet paper to maintain hygiene onboard.
- Conduct full or deep cleans depending on team assignment, ensuring compliance with hygiene standards.
- Operate specialist cleaning machinery and equipment after training to tackle ingrained dirt throughout the train.
- Respond promptly and safely to significant cleaning incidents, including biological spills like blood or vomit.
- Collaborate closely with team members to guarantee trains are prepared and ready for service punctually.
Candidate Profile
- Detail-oriented, dependable, and proud of maintaining high-quality cleanliness standards.
- Comfortable working night shifts as part of either Full Clean or Deep Clean teams to prepare trains for daily operations.
- Able to learn and operate specialized equipment and cleaning methods.
- Physically capable of climbing onto trains from ground level and maintaining activity throughout the shift, commonly walking 10,000 steps overnight.
- Flexible to work weekend and bank holiday shifts within a rotating schedule.
- No prior cleaning experience required; full training will be provided.
Requirements and Eligibility
- Must be at least 21 years old and hold a full UK driving licence with a clean driving record due to company van usage.
- Must live within a 45-minute car journey of the assigned station.
- Pass a Rail Safety and Standards Board (RSSB) medical assessment including drug and alcohol testing.
- Normal color vision is required.
Working Conditions
The role involves working outdoors and inside trains across all weather conditions during night hours, approximately 35 hours weekly.
