Machine Learning Engineer

Overview

Join Uber's pioneering AI Security team, a key part of the Core Security Engineering group, in developing dynamic, data-centric security frameworks. The team is advancing Uber's Zero Trust Architecture by introducing risk-adaptive, real-time machine learning driven access controls that protect both users and automated AI systems.

Role and Responsibilities

• Collaborate to translate complex business and security challenges into well-defined machine learning objectives.
• Develop, refine, and deploy ML models that facilitate adaptive risk-aware decisions in real time.
• Design and engineer high-quality features leveraging Uber's security risk data, extensive logs, and contextual intelligence.
• Maintain robust ML pipelines ensuring production-grade reliability and scalability.
• Work closely with experienced engineers to seamlessly integrate ML-driven decision-making within Uber's authentication and authorization systems.

Required Skills and Experience

• Minimum of three years' experience in creating and deploying machine learning models in live production environments.
• Proficiency in Python programming and ML frameworks such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, or equivalents.
• Strong grasp of diverse machine learning algorithms, including tree-based models like XGBoost and LightGBM, traditional methods such as logistic regression and SVMs, and familiarity with neural network architectures including CNNs, RNNs, and Transformers.
• Capability to analyze and map business and security requirements into practical ML use cases.

Preferred Qualifications

• Background in risk assessment, fraud detection, anomaly identification, or security-focused machine learning applications.
• Experience working with large scale data and infrastructure tools including Kafka, Hive, Spark, Flink, and Pinot.
• Understanding of challenges like imbalanced datasets, feedback loops, and continuous model retraining.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication abilities to collaborate effectively across infrastructure, risk, and security divisions.

Compensation and Benefits

For candidates based in San Francisco, CA, the annual base salary ranges from USD 171,000 to USD 190,000. This role also participates in Uber's bonus program, equity awards, 401(k) retirement plan, and a comprehensive benefits package.

Additional Details

This role primarily supports a hybrid or remote work setup; however, employees are expected to spend at least 50% of their time on-site unless granted fully remote status. Positions requiring full on-site presence are applicable at specific locations such as Greenlight hubs.
