Job Overview

This position is open to all applicants, with preference given to current or former University of Alberta employees. It is a term appointment lasting one year and one day from the date of hire. The role is based on-site at various University of Alberta campuses in Edmonton and requires the locksmith to be registered and legally security-audited by Alberta Justice and the Solicitor General.

Responsibilities

• Install designated high-security locking mechanisms, deadbolts, and keyless entry systems.
• Repair or replace malfunctioning or damaged door components including closers, hinges, electric release systems, and occasionally the doors themselves.
• Change lock key combinations by re-pinning locks as required.
• Design sophisticated master key systems tailored for end users.
• Participate in an on-call rotation to promptly handle emergencies such as lost or stolen keys, break-ins, unsecured doors, and vandalism to ensure safety and security at all times.
• Manage and maintain high-security keying systems for private organizations affiliated with the university.

Qualifications

• Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent education.
• Certification as a Journeyperson Locksmith.
• Completion of supervisory safety training.
• Minimum five years of locksmith experience within institutional settings.
• Possession of a valid Alberta Class 5 driver's license (non-GDL).
• Ability to provide a recent three-year driving abstract showing no more than six demerits and no more than two moving violations within the last two years.
