Position Summary
The Lead Mechanical Design Engineer will oversee the mechanical design aspects of infrastructure projects in Qatar, spanning from initial concepts to detailed engineering. This leadership role requires ensuring designs meet Qatar's regulations, international codes, client expectations, and project timelines. Responsibilities also include multidisciplinary coordination, client engagement, mentorship of engineering teams, and producing high-quality deliverables for water, wastewater, district cooling, transportation, utility, and mixed-use projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead mechanical engineering design at all stages: concept, preliminary, detailed design, and tendering.
- Develop innovative, practical, and cost-effective engineering solutions.
- Review and approve design calculations, drawings, specifications, bills of quantities, and technical documentation.
- Ensure compliance with Qatar Construction Specifications, local regulations, and international standards.
- Coordinate mechanical aspects with civil, structural, electrical, architectural, and utilities disciplines.
- Design and evaluate systems including pumping stations; water transmission and distribution; wastewater and stormwater pumping; district cooling; utility tunnels; firefighting systems; HVAC for infrastructure buildings; and other building services.
- Select mechanical equipment and conduct pressure surge and hydraulic pipeline analyses.
- Manage project teams, allocate resources, monitor budgets and schedules, and ensure timely delivery of design packages.
- Lead design reviews and value-engineering workshops; identify risks and suggest mitigation strategies.
- Engage with clients, consultants, and government agencies through meetings and presentations; support proposals and technical submissions; participate in design reviews with Ashghal and related authorities.
- Ensure strict adherence to QCS, Ashghal manuals, Kahramaa, Qatar Civil Defence, NFPA, ASME, API, BS/EN, ISO standards, and company QA/QC processes.
- Oversee interdisciplinary coordination before issuing deliverables.
- Lead and mentor mechanical engineers and CAD/BIM personnel, providing technical guidance and overseeing performance development.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering is mandatory; Master's degree is preferred.
- Professional registration such as Chartered Engineer (CEng), PE, or equivalent is advantageous.
- 12 to 15 years of progressive mechanical design experience with a minimum of 5 years in a lead engineering role.
- Proven track record in infrastructure engineering consultancy, preferably with large-scale projects in Qatar or the GCC region.
- Experience collaborating with multidisciplinary engineering teams.
Technical Competencies
- Proficient with mechanical design software: AutoCAD, Civil 3D (coordination), Revit MEP, Navisworks, BIM 360; Plant 3D experience is preferred.
- Skilled in hydraulic and engineering analysis software including WaterGEMS, SewerGEMS, HAMMER, EPANET, AFT Fathom, and Pipe Flow Expert.
