Role Overview
This position is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and orderly facility along with the surrounding property. The role includes routine custodial work, seasonal outdoor upkeep, basic security checks, and reporting maintenance or safety concerns.
Key Duties
- Carry out regular cleaning and housekeeping tasks across the building, including floors, washrooms, windows, dusting, vacuuming, and garbage removal.
- Move, clean, arrange, and dust furniture as needed.
- Maintain exterior areas by mowing, shoveling snow and ice, sweeping sidewalks, picking up litter, watering and pruning plants, raking, and cleaning outside windows on the main level.
- Check doors and windows to help protect building security.
- Report repair needs and safety issues involving furniture, fixtures, and other facility concerns.
- Replenish washroom supplies.
- Perform detailed cleaning tasks such as spot-cleaning accessible walls, stripping and waxing floors, and shampooing carpets.
- Take on other related duties as assigned.

All duties must be carried out in line with The Salvation Army’s mission, vision, values, professional standards, and code of conduct.
Education and Experience
The preferred education level is completion of public school, although an alternate combination of education and experience may also be accepted. Up to three months of related experience is required, including prior cleaning work and familiarity with cleaning products and procedures.
Physical and Work Conditions
The job involves regular use of industrial cleaning equipment and tools, along with activities such as mopping, sweeping, bending, twisting, lifting, and shoveling snow. The work requires steady attention, especially when using powered equipment, handling hazardous chemicals, and operating standard cleaning tools. The role is based throughout the facility and its surrounding property, with little to no travel expected.
Challenges and Hazards
Work may involve exposure to unpleasant or difficult conditions such as garbage, washrooms and bodily waste, odors, verbal abuse, angry individuals, isolation, monotony, toxic chemicals, changing weather, sharp or moving objects, slippery surfaces, electrical hazards, infectious diseases, physical assault, and repetitive strain injuries. Additional risks noted for this site include pressure from tight timelines, items falling from high shelving, and possible carpal tunnel syndrome.
Safety and Compliance Requirements
The employee must follow standard safety procedures and precautionary measures, including universal precautions, gloves, eye and ear protection, eyewash stations, fume masks when required, and steel-toe boots. Additional site-specific requirements include hepatitis vaccination, a criminal record check, an adult abuse registry check, and a child abuse registry check.
Compensation
The pay range for this role is $16.52 per hour, with both the target and maximum rate listed at $16.52. Final placement within the range depends on market conditions, internal equity, and the candidate’s relevant experience, skills, and qualifications.
