About the Role

We are seeking a dedicated Human Resources Advisor to join the People & Capability team at New Zealand Customs Service. This fixed-term secondment, available until May 2027, will cover parental leave and is located at the Wellington Customhouse.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver practical, first-line HR advice and assistance to both managers and employees across the organization.
  • Support employment relations, particularly within a unionized setting, providing guidance on disciplinary procedures.
  • Assist managers in understanding and applying employment terms, conditions, people policies, and procedures.
  • Foster strong collaborative relationships and contribute to a trusted and responsive HR service.
  • Effectively manage diverse workload demands, competing priorities, and deadlines while maintaining attention to detail and sound judgment.

Candidate Profile

This role suits an experienced, organised, and proactive HR professional passionate about people management. Candidates experienced in unionized environments and employment relations, especially in navigating disciplinary processes, will be preferred. The position offers an opportunity to enhance HR advisory skills, engage in continuous improvement, and handle a varied range of responsibilities within a supportive team.

Applicants should be confident communicators, self-motivated with strong initiative, and have keen attention to detail. At least two years of HR advisory experience is ideal. Adaptability, a solutions-oriented mindset, and eagerness to grow in a dynamic public sector setting are important.

Salary Details

The salary for this fixed-term role ranges from $89,802 to $115,658 annually, depending on the candidate's qualifications and experience, and will be pro-rated accordingly.

Eligibility and Requirements

  • You must be a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident.
  • Applicants should have resided continuously in New Zealand for the last five years and must be residing in New Zealand at the time of application. Limited travel exemptions apply with specific country police certificates required.
  • A clean police record is mandatory.
  • Successful candidates must obtain and maintain an Organisational Security Clearance conducted by Customs.
  • Passing a drug test is required due to the nature of the work.
