Job description

About the Role and Organisation

We are seeking multiple Associates at various experience levels to join our Tier 1 Healthcare team located in Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol, Southampton, or London offices. Our Healthcare practice recently earned the Investors in People Gold award in 2023, reflecting our dedication to engagement, superior quality work, and exceptional results.

The healthcare sector globally is rapidly evolving due to the ageing population and increased chronic lifestyle diseases. Our multidisciplinary international healthcare group combines expertise from various legal specialties including litigation, inquests, capacity and consent law, projects and construction, real estate, corporate, insurance, intellectual property, commercial, IT, regulatory, and employment law.

We serve a diverse client base comprising public and private hospitals, pharmaceutical firms, insurers, healthcare suppliers and distributors, healthcare investment-focused private equity firms, and government health ministries and authorities across our offices worldwide.

The position reports directly to a partner handling a broad spectrum of healthcare legal matters such as representation at inquests, defending clinicians before regulatory authorities, matters of medical device/product liability, and general legal advisory.

Key Responsibilities

  • Utilise expert legal knowledge to address complex healthcare-related legal issues.
  • Draft, analyze, and interpret advanced legal documents in specialized healthcare contexts.
  • Provide counsel on claims involving breaches of professional standards.
  • Engage in legal consultations and coordinate with clients and witnesses.
  • Conduct presentations, contribute written content for publications, and host client-focused events.
  • Develop an in-depth understanding of client operations to identify legal support opportunities.
  • Prepare requisite court submissions and legal documentation.
  • Seek and cultivate new business prospects and expand existing client relationships.
  • Promote cross-office collaboration and service integration within the firm.
  • Manage client expectations and negotiations by understanding their needs and objectives.

Qualifications and Experience

  • A minimum of one year Post-Qualified Experience (PQE) is preferred; however, all suitably qualified candidates will be considered.
  • Demonstrated strong legal acumen and the ability to prioritize and manage a diverse caseload effectively.
  • Substantial experience in defended clinical negligence cases, including medical malpractice, particularly with multimillion-pound litigation.
  • Work experience within the healthcare sector is desirable.
  • Possess a current practising certificate pursuant to the Solicitors Act 1974.
  • Completion of a Training Contract or equivalent legal qualification, including Legal Practice Course, Graduate Diploma in Law (if applicable), and a 2:1 honours degree or equivalent academic qualifications such as A Levels.

Additional Information and Benefits

The firm fosters a supportive, collaborative environment and offers flexible hybrid working arrangements at its offices. Benefits include 25 days of annual leave with an option to purchase extra days, pension plans, health cash schemes, life assurance, and income protection. Employees also gain access to discounts on gym memberships, car leasing, mobile phone contracts, insurance plans, and a cycle-to-work program.

Clyde & Co is devoted to diversity, equality, and inclusion in employment practices and encourages applications from all qualified individuals. The firm takes a proactive role in corporate social responsibility through pro bono work, charitable partnerships, and sustainable operational initiatives aligned with Net-Zero emissions targets.
