SYOS Aerospace is innovating the future of autonomous technologies across aerial, land, and marine vehicles. Located in Mount Maunganui, Bay of Plenty, New Zealand, we focus on creating next-generation systems for autonomous operation.

Role Overview

We seek a GNC Team Lead to oversee and mentor a group of about nine Guidance, Navigation, and Control (GNC) Engineers and Integration Engineers. This leadership position demands strong technical expertise and focuses on team development, task management, and technical direction across various programs. The successful candidate will substantially influence the growth of our GNC capabilities and our autonomous system deployment.

This position is based onsite in Mount Maunganui with relocation assistance available for qualified candidates.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of GNC professionals fostering a high-achieving team culture.
  • Define objectives, monitor team performance, and build a cohesive, effective work environment.
  • Organize and prioritize tasks across multiple projects ensuring efficient workload distribution.
  • Provide expert technical support on GNC development, integration, and testing phases.
  • Assist with complex engineering problem-solving and technical decision-making.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with software, systems, electronics, mechatronics, and flight test engineers.
  • Promote ongoing enhancements in GNC processes and operational practices.

Candidate Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Aerospace, Robotics, Electrical, Mechatronics, Computer Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Demonstrated experience in leading engineering teams.
  • Comprehensive understanding of GNC principles such as control theory, state estimation, and sensor fusion.
  • Practical experience with GNC development or integration for UAV, UGV, or USV platforms.
  • Proficiency with MATLAB/Simulink, embedded systems, and Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testing.
  • Knowledge of GNSS/GPS systems, inertial measurement units (IMUs), and navigation and perception sensors.
  • Strong communication capabilities, adept in problem-solving and managing stakeholder relations.

Preferred Skills

  • Programming abilities in C++ and/or Python.
  • Familiarity with PX4, ArduPilot, or ROS/ROS2 software frameworks.
  • Hands-on experience with field testing of autonomous vehicles.
  • Background in aerospace, robotics, defense, or maritime sectors.
