Field Data Specialist-Res

Overview

This role focuses on inspecting, gathering, recording, and evaluating assigned residential field assessments across Marion County. The specialist must make sure residential property details are measured correctly and entered into the property tax system promptly so Assessment Division staff and other city and county agencies can rely on the information.

The work is guided by applicable laws and IAAO standards. When clear procedures are not available, the position calls for sound independent judgment, while routine tasks are handled under moderate supervision. A valid driver’s license is required. The position reports to the District Manager of Residential.

Responsibilities

• Verify that residential property in Marion County is assessed in line with Indiana law, DLGF regulations, and IAAO standards.
• Review existing work for accuracy and confirm that property additions or removals are entered correctly for all residential parcels.
• Interpret site plans and residential construction blueprints.
• Work with taxpayers or their representatives to secure access to properties when needed.
• Coordinate with GIS staff, permit and zoning teams, and other public agencies as necessary.
• Plan and organize parcel routes and workload priorities.
• Provide professional, courteous support to office visitors, callers, and supervisors or team members encountered in the field.
• Protect confidential information at all times.
• Carry out other related duties as assigned, since the list is not exhaustive and may change based on management needs.

Qualifications

Applicants should have a high school diploma or equivalent and at least one year of relevant work experience. They must either already hold, or be willing to obtain within 12 months of hire, DLGF Level II Assessor/Appraiser Certification. Strong project management, computer, math, geometry, and communication skills are needed, along with familiarity with imaging systems and other software. The role also requires a professional and courteous approach with customers in person, by phone, and by email, strong attention to detail, the ability to type and prepare/edit reports, and effective oral and written communication. All work must comply with state law. Bilingual candidates are preferred.

Working Conditions

About half of the job is performed in a standard office setting without exposure to adverse conditions, while the other half involves travel and outdoor work where adverse conditions may be present.

• May require light lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling of materials weighing about 5 to 10 pounds.
