Employment Counsel

About the Role

Axiom, a global leader in alternative legal services, is partnering with a prestigious university to recruit a Legal Counsel. This role serves as a primary legal resource within the legal team, providing expert, timely advice relating to employment matters, disputes, complaints, and investigations. The position involves oversight of complex investigations concerning students, staff, and third parties, especially in matters involving serious misconduct and elevated legal risks.

Key Responsibilities

• Serve proactively as a service-oriented contact for internal clients and external parties across HR, workplace relations, student conduct, dispute resolution, and other portfolios as needed.
• Offer legal and strategic counsel on staff and student disputes, including managing negotiations, mediations, resolutions, and court or tribunal proceedings, as well as coordinating with external legal counsel.
• Forge and sustain effective working relationships with key stakeholders and their teams, delivering targeted legal training on relevant contemporary issues.
• Develop and update template legal documents and resources, and disseminate regular legal updates via internal communication channels.
• Supervise engagements with external legal advisers ensuring alignment with organizational policies and procedures.

Candidate Requirements

• Extensive legal experience in workplace relations encompassing employment, industrial relations, safety, and discrimination law; experience in the higher education sector either in-house or private practice is highly preferred.
• Proven track record in delivering prompt, practical legal advice tailored to business needs, collaborating effectively with stakeholders at varying levels.
• Ability to maintain strict confidentiality, exercise diplomacy, and influence others, supported by excellent interpersonal skills and efficient time management.
• Capability to work independently within a dynamic team environment, demonstrating a positive and proactive attitude.
