Position Overview
Keneco Environmental Inc., situated in Calgary, Alberta, seeks a dedicated Ecological Technician to bolster environmental assessment, reclamation, and monitoring projects connected to upstream oil and gas operations throughout Alberta and Saskatchewan. This position involves a hybrid of office work and frequent field assignments across these regions.
Primary Responsibilities
- Execute ecological and environmental field investigations such as soil, groundwater, surface water, and vegetation evaluations.
- Support Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs) as well as Detailed Site Assessments (DSAs).
- Conduct field surveys, gather environmental samples, and document data to facilitate environmental assessments and reclamation initiatives.
- Monitor air, water, and soil quality while interpreting analytical results based on environmental guidelines.
- Maintain accurate field data related to soil conditions, vegetation growth, land disturbances, and reclamation milestones.
- Assess vegetation and site conditions to determine ecological health and advance reclamation and closure goals.
- Assist in reclamation and remediation efforts, including site inspections, soil management, and vegetation progress monitoring.
- Oversee field activities and contractor performance to ensure adherence to environmental, reclamation, and safety protocols.
- Contribute to the preparation of comprehensive technical reports such as environmental site assessments, reclamation documentation, and regulatory filings.
- Coordinate fieldwork logistics including scheduling and equipment readiness.
- Ensure compliance with provincial environmental regulations and company health and safety standards.
Qualifications and Experience
- Diploma or degree in Environmental Engineering Technology, Environmental Science, or related discipline.
- At least 3 years of practical experience in environmental or ecological fieldwork or consulting environments.
- Background in conducting Phase I and preferably Phase II Environmental Site Assessments.
- Demonstrated experience in environmental monitoring, field surveys, or ecological evaluations.
- Prior exposure to upstream oil and gas sites considered advantageous.
- Experience with reclamation or remediation projects, including knowledge of Detailed Site Assessments and provincial certification processes in Alberta and Saskatchewan, is a plus.
Skills and Technical Proficiencies
- Understanding of environmental sampling and site investigation methods.
- Capability to collect, interpret, and analyze ecological and environmental datasets.
- Strong report writing and technical documentation skills.
- Excellent organizational and communication abilities.
- Familiarity with regulatory frameworks governing Alberta Energy Regulator, Alberta Environment and Protected Areas, and Saskatchewan Ministry of Energy and Resources.
- Knowledge of provincial guidelines for soil and groundwater quality and reclamation standards is beneficial.
Additional Requirements
- Valid Class 5 driver's license.
- Willingness and ability to travel extensively to remote field locations across Alberta and Saskatchewan.
- Comfort working under diverse weather and field conditions.
- Possession or readiness to acquire safety certifications including H₂S Alive, Standard First Aid with CPR, Ground Disturbance Level II, WHMIS, and Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) is expected.
Compensation and Work Hours
- Hourly wage of $37.00 based on a standard 40-hour week.
