About Samsara Eco
Samsara Eco is a biotechnology innovator focused on creating infinite recycling solutions for plastics and textiles to establish a sustainable, circular economy. Our mission is to reduce environmental impact by turning waste into reusable materials for various applications such as packaging, clothing, and airbags. Located near Canberra, Australia, we seek passionate individuals to join us in making a real difference for the planet while advancing their careers.
Role Purpose
As a Data Engineer on the Data Platform team, you will contribute to the development of Samsara’s Industrial AI Platform by building robust data pipelines. You will work alongside scientists, engineers, and computational experts to integrate diverse data from experiments, process models, production lines, and analytic instruments into scalable and reliable ingestion workflows.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain data ingestion pipelines from sources including electronic lab notebooks (ELN), SharePoint, laboratory instruments, physics simulations, production line data, and process engineering systems.
- Support real-time ingestion for production and process data, integrating with data historian systems to capture continuous data flows.
- Ensure ingestion processes maintain important metadata such as source context, timestamps, unique identifiers, and data provenance.
- Collaborate closely with instrument owners and analytical teams to connect critical laboratory instruments to the data platform.
- Assist with laboratory automation initiatives including barcode scanning, inventory tracking, and calibration workflows to enhance data capture accuracy.
- Design pipelines with an emphasis on observability, testability, and maintainability to accommodate evolving data sources.
- Work with the Data Team to transform raw ingested data into reliable, production-grade datasets.
- Align pipeline design with platform infrastructure requirements including orchestration, accessibility, and storage standards.
- Document source systems thoroughly, outlining behaviors, assumptions, known limitations, and issues for future reference.
Qualifications and Skills
- Proven experience building and sustaining data pipelines involving structured, semi-structured, and time-series data.
- Advanced proficiency in Python and SQL, with applied knowledge of modern data engineering frameworks.
- Experience with workflow orchestration tools such as Apache Airflow, Prefect, or Dagster is preferred.
- Familiarity with ingesting data into cloud data lakes or lake-house architectures.
- Strong grasp of data quality assurance, observability, lineage tracking, and pipeline reliability principles.
- Ability to engage with both technical and non-technical stakeholders to comprehend source systems and operational needs.
- Experience with platforms like Databricks, Snowflake, AWS, Apache Iceberg, and lake-house technologies is highly desirable.
- Background connecting laboratory instruments, ELN/LIMS, manufacturing, or process simulation tools adds value.
- Knowledge of HPLC, differential scanning fluorimetry, liquid handling devices, Aspen software, data historians, barcoding, and inventory management systems is a plus.
- Prior work in biotech, bioprocessing, chemical engineering, manufacturing, or climate technology environments is advantageous.
Cultural Fit and Values
- Strong dedication to the mission of environmental repair and sustainability.
- Intellectual rigor combined with humility and willingness to undertake any necessary task.
- Ability to build genuine rapport across scientific, engineering, and business teams.
- A proactive and purposeful approach driven by the urgency of the mission.
Why Join Samsara Eco?
- Contribute directly to repairing the planet through meaningful work.
- Collaborate with passionate scientists, engineers, and innovators.
- Enjoy a flat organizational structure that offers autonomy and decision-making authority.
- Benefit from flexible work arrangements, competitive compensation, and supportive benefits promoting work-life balance.
- Thrive in a culture that encourages bold ideas, rapid innovation, and meaningful impact.
