Job description

About the Role

Join LiveEO as a Data Engineer to enhance and stabilize the data delivery and serving framework supporting SurfaceScout, our satellite analytics solution that monitors critical infrastructure such as pipelines and power lines. You will be responsible for the entire process from detection to reliable insight delivery, managing services that support data delivery, insight generation, and post-processing across large geospatial extents on a daily schedule. While detection methods and remote sensing models are developed by other teams, you will maintain the systems that transform these outputs into trustworthy, resilient products.

You will be part of the SurfaceScout Data Engineering & Machine Learning team, collaborating with senior engineers on platform ownership and with other squads on shared API development and data quality assurance. Your contribution focuses on backend and platform engineering with opportunities to extend into broader geospatial data areas.

Technical Environment

  • Primary language: Python (managed via uvicorn)
  • Backend frameworks and libraries: FastAPI, Uvicorn, SQLAlchemy, Alembic, and Pydantic
  • Databases: PostgreSQL with PostGIS extensions through GeoAlchemy2
  • Cloud infrastructure: AWS services including S3, Lambda, and EC2
  • Workflow orchestration: Prefect and Ray (Anyscale)
  • Geospatial libraries: GDAL, Rasterio, GeoPandas, Shapely, STAC (pystac), and Cloud-Optimized GeoTIFF (rio-cogeo)
  • Machine learning lifecycle: MLflow

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaboratively develop and improve delivery management and insight generation services that transform detection models into consumable insights.
  • Enhance service robustness, documentation, and testing to remove single points of ownership.
  • Maintain AWS-based delivery platform including orchestration scripts, infrastructure-as-code, and continuous releases ensuring repeatability.
  • Administer PostgreSQL and PostGIS data structures, including schema management and migrations with Alembic.
  • Serve as a secondary support owner resolving pipeline failures, maintaining service-level agreements, and minimizing manual interventions.
  • Automate quality assurance processes across data pipeline stages, verifying schema conformity, geometry integrity, and metadata completeness for traceability.

Candidate Profile

  • Proficient Python developer with experience in production-level backend services.
  • Hands-on with FastAPI or equivalent frameworks, and ORM libraries like SQLAlchemy with migration tools such as Alembic.
  • Experienced in PostgreSQL and spatial database extensions (PostGIS, GeoAlchemy2) is highly advantageous.
  • Familiar with AWS services including S3, Lambda, EC2, and foundational IAM management.
  • Knowledgeable in orchestration tools such as Prefect, Airflow, or Dagster.
  • Comfortable manipulating geospatial raster and vector data using tools like Rasterio, GeoPandas, Shapely, STAC, and COG.
  • Strong focus on reliable service delivery, with an operational mindset toward testing and maintaining uptime.
  • Commitment to data validation and output verification using both coding and critical judgement.
  • Additional advantages include experience with distributed computing frameworks like Ray or Anyscale, MLflow or comparable ML experiment tracking, familiarity with remote sensing approaches and SAR data, observability tools including structured logging and OpenTelemetry, and working knowledge of satellite API providers.

Employee Benefits

  • Work on a global-impact product improving operational processes worldwide.
  • Flexible working hours combined with a hybrid model promoting work-life balance.
  • Encouragement for personal career growth, creativity, and ownership.
  • Work culture that minimizes overtime and compensates extra hours with time off.
  • Supportive environment featuring frequent workshops, knowledge sharing, journal clubs, and hackathons.
  • Office based in Berlin Kreuzberg offering free healthy snacks and drinks.
  • Option to participate in employee stock option plans.
  • Additional benefits like Urban Sports membership, public transport subsidies, and corporate retirement plans.
  • International work environment with diverse staff from over 30 nationalities.
