About the Role

Join the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions in our efforts to promote biodiversity, conserve ecosystems, and engage the public with Western Australia's natural heritage. We are offering a 12-month fixed-term, full-time opportunity based in Kensington, with potential for extension or permanency.

This position is integral to our dynamic media team within the Public Information and Corporate Affairs branch, responsible for crafting impactful communication that highlights the department’s key initiatives and connects people to wildlife, national parks, and conservation zones.

Key Responsibilities

  • Generate and manage positive media exposure for departmental achievements and respond effectively to media enquiries, including complex or contentious matters.
  • Create compelling communications content across diverse platforms such as media releases, social media, and digital channels.
  • Develop and maintain strong collaborative relationships with internal teams and external stakeholders including media and partners.
  • Issue community safety alerts during department-managed incidents such as bushfires.
  • Participate in an after-hours media rotation that includes evenings and some weekends.

Candidate Requirements

  • Proven experience in communications fields such as journalism, public relations, government, or corporate communications.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple projects under pressure, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines.
  • Skills in managing sensitive and contentious communication issues effectively.

Additional Information

Applicants must hold Australian citizenship, New Zealand citizenship, Australian permanent residency, or a valid working visa. Prior to employment, a satisfactory National Police Check issued within the last six months is required. The department is an equal opportunity employer and actively supports diversity and flexible working arrangements. Reasonable adjustments will be provided for applicants with disabilities throughout the recruitment and work processes.

Applicants should submit a cover letter, a statement addressing the selection criteria (max three pages), and a current CV with two referees. Applications must be submitted in Word (.docx) or PDF formats.

Benefits

  • Flexible working arrangements.
  • 12% superannuation with full employer contributions and options for salary packaging.
  • Four weeks of annual leave with an additional 17.5% leave loading paid each December.
  • Three extra public sector holidays annually.
  • Cultural leave for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff.
  • Access to study, bereavement, foster caring, and parental leave.
  • Confidential employee assistance program for staff and families.
  • Annual National Park Entry Pass.
  • Established learning and development opportunities.
