仕事内容

Overview

NHS Tayside is recruiting a Clinical Scientist pre-registration trainee for a fixed-term appointment lasting 3 years. The post is based in the Regional Genetic Laboratory Service at Ninewells Hospital, Dundee, with a planned start in September 2026. The laboratory delivers a high-quality genomic testing service for NHS Tayside and the wider Scottish network through the Scottish Genomic Strategic Network.

Working alongside other laboratory disciplines within Ninewells Hospital, the service supports testing for inherited disorders, acquired disease including solid and blood cancers, and pharmacogenomics. The laboratory is designed to provide strong facilities and expert support for trainee development.

Training and professional outcome

The successful trainee will follow an agreed programme of training that is structured to help build the evidence portfolio needed for assessment and later registration with the Health and Care Professions Council as a Clinical Scientist. Training in Genomics and Molecular Pathology is supported by NHS Education for Scotland.

There may also be additional training opportunities within the Regional Genetic Laboratories in Aberdeen, Glasgow, and Edinburgh, although those posts are advertised separately.

Candidate profile

Applications are welcome from candidates with at least a First or Upper Second Class BSc Honours degree in Genetics or another suitable biological subject.

Equality and inclusion

NHS Scotland is committed to equality, diversity, and the removal of unlawful discrimination. The organisation aims for a workforce that reflects the communities it serves and wants every employee to feel respected and able to contribute fully.

Employment terms

This is a fixed-term role for 3 years.

Current NHS Tayside employees applying for this secondment must first obtain written approval from their line manager and bring that approval if selected for interview.

Application and communication notes

Applications are completed through the organisation's online recruitment system. A CV should not be uploaded because it will not be used for shortlisting. Vacancies close at midnight on the stated closing date.

Shortlisted candidates will be contacted by email, so applicants should check their inbox regularly, including junk or spam folders. If you need support with the application system, you should contact the candidate support team.

Applicants who want to take part in the Job Interview Guarantee Scheme should contact the hiring manager if invited to interview to discuss any adjustments needed to attend. Please make sure your email address is entered accurately, as correspondence is sent by email. After submission, the application cannot be changed.

Current staff should ensure their recruitment profile is updated to show that they are employed by NHS Tayside.

Informal contact

Informal enquiries may be directed to David Baty or Joanne McLean.
