Job Overview

This is an excellent opportunity to begin a career in Audiology as a trainee Associate Audiology Practitioner with a fixed term appointment for two years. The role involves full training through university block release and hands-on clinical experience at Royal Gwent Hospital. The post-holder will complete an 18-month course and a related in-service training programme that enhances existing scientific understanding and skillset. Training focuses on managing routine and non-complex hearing conditions across all age groups, with particular emphasis on hearing assessments, hearing aid fittings, and adult rehabilitation procedures.

Commitment and Conditions

The position is funded by Health Education and Improvement Wales (HEIW). Successful candidates must commit to working within Wales for at least two years post-training. Prior approval from current managers is required if applying for this secondment. This is a fixed-term post driven by departmental needs and salaries follow NHS Band 3 pay scales, updated as per the 2026/2027 Agenda for Change pay award with implementation retroactive to April 2026.

Key Responsibilities

• Follow an agreed curriculum under the supervision of senior staff and mentors aligned with the Audiology Training Programme.
• Engage in clinical duties primarily focused on adult patient care within audiology services.
• Foster professional growth and technological expertise essential for effective hearing assessments and interventions.
• Work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team to deliver high-quality audiological care.

Required Skills and Experiences

• Strong foundational scientific knowledge equivalent to at least a foundation degree, Higher National Diploma, or Diploma in Higher Education in a science-related field.
• Experience with scientific project work including data gathering, analysis, and reporting is essential.
• Computer literacy and capability to communicate clearly, including with hearing-impaired individuals.
• Ability to prioritize workload autonomously and adapt flexibly to service requirements.
• Empathy and aptitude for communicating with patients of all ages and their families, potentially including those with hearing impairments.
• Capability to travel between clinical sites.

Desired Qualifications and Attributes

• Scientific degree-level qualifications or demonstrable academic experience in scientific subjects are desirable.
• Welsh speaking skills and deaf awareness are beneficial.
• Customer-facing experience and previous roles involving care or direct interaction with people are advantages.
