About the Role
The Publications Department manages a comprehensive program that includes scholarly catalogues, quarterly magazines for museum members, brochures, and various other printed materials across the museum campus. Reporting to the Director of Publications, the Associate Publications Designer collaborates internally and with external partners to ensure the production of high-quality printed materials, upholding the Cleveland Museum of Art's reputation for excellence.
This position is situated within the Exhibition, Design, and Publications Division and occasionally supports the Design & Experience Department. This support may involve creating designs for in-gallery labels, didactics, and environmental graphic projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Create designs for scholarly publications utilizing expertise in typography, style sheets, and grid systems.
- Work closely with colleagues throughout the museum to design and compile the quarterly members magazine, Cleveland Art.
- Prepare proofs, special instructions, and digital files suitable for both print and digital channels such as the museum website and online presentations.
- Incorporate an understanding of the museum's diverse audience to generate designs that prioritize accessibility, inclusiveness, and equity.
- Stay informed about current and emerging trends in graphic design and sustainability.
- Foster collaboration with a positive, adaptable approach to maintain effective relationships across departments.
- Communicate ideas clearly and confidently in both written and verbal formats to various stakeholders.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline.
- Two to three years of professional experience in designing scholarly publications and other printed materials.
- Proficiency in desktop publishing software including Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop is essential; familiarity with digital publishing is advantageous.
- Experience working within museums or cultural institutions is considered beneficial.
- A professional design portfolio must be submitted for application consideration.
- Ability to manage multiple complex projects concurrently and prioritize tasks efficiently in a dynamic environment.
- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy, alongside strong collaboration skills.
Compensation
The salary for this position ranges between $50,000 and $53,000 annually.
