Armour Soldier

Overview

Armour Soldiers in the Canadian Armed Forces operate and maintain armoured fighting vehicles (AFVs), including their weapon and communication systems. As part of the Combat Arms team alongside Infantry, Artillery, and Combat Engineering regiments, Armour Soldiers start their careers working with tanks or Light Armoured Vehicles (LAV 6). They serve as crew members trained to drive, operate, or fire these vehicles.

Key Duties

• Operate and conduct maintenance on AFVs
• Fire and load the main gun and machine guns of AFVs
• Use surveillance equipment effectively
• Maintain communications devices
• Collect and transmit intelligence on enemy forces and terrain
• Engage enemy targets with direct fire

Work Environment

Armour Soldiers face diverse challenges both in the field and during international deployments. Regular Force members, after training, are assigned to bases and may be relocated during their careers. Primary Reserve Force members typically serve part time with a local unit without mandatory relocations and usually work one evening weekly and some weekends, with opportunities for full-time roles.

Entry Requirements and Training

• No prior experience or related skills required; guidance provided by recruiters
• Minimum education: completion of provincial Grade 10 or Secondary 4 in Quebec; foreign education may be accepted
• Initial training includes Basic Military Qualification at Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School, focusing on core military skills and physical fitness
• Specialized 12-week Combat Training Centre course covering physical fitness, reconnaissance, weapons handling, vehicle operation, communications, and armour doctrine

Advanced and Specialized Training Opportunities

• Options for specialized skills including Uncrewed Aerial System Operator, Assault Troop, Direct Fire Gunnery Instructor, and Arctic Operations Advisor
• Progressive training for roles such as Army Direct Fire Specialist, CBRN Defence Advisor, Assault Troop Leader, UAS Detachment Commander, and Crew Commander

Part-Time Opportunities

Armour Soldiers can also serve part time in the Primary Reserve Force, training to the same standards as Regular Force members. Reserve members typically serve evenings and weekends, may hold full-time fixed positions, receive pay and benefits, and have deployment opportunities. Training includes basic military skills followed by 12-week trade-specific courses.
