Job description
Overview
We are pleased to invite applications for the position of Waste Operative within the Waste Management team at UHS Estates Ltd (UEL). This role is instrumental in maintaining a hygienic, safe, and environmentally responsible setting for patients, staff, and visitors at University Hospital Southampton.
Role Responsibilities
- Collecting and transporting waste safely from both clinical and non-clinical areas throughout the hospital site.
- Segregating waste correctly in compliance with University Hospital Southampton’s policies and national legislation.
- Operating waste handling equipment such as bailers and compactors safely and effectively.
- Ensuring waste storage spaces are kept clean and orderly.
- Collaborating with the broader Facilities team to deliver a dependable and high-standard service.
Candidate Profile
- Positive and proactive mindset with a committed work ethic.
- Capable of working autonomously as well as in a team environment.
- Basic understanding of health and safety protocols and infection control measures, with training provided.
- Flexible availability to work a rota schedule between 7am and 8pm, Monday through Sunday.
Required Qualifications, Skills, and Experience
- Prior experience operating bailers, compactors, or specialized waste management equipment.
- Able to adhere to standard procedures while also independently resolving occasional work challenges.
- Willingness and capacity for on-the-job training to fulfill role requirements.
- Strong interpersonal skills to build rapport with colleagues across the organization.
- Capacity to perform repetitive tasks and follow both verbal and written instructions clearly.
- Experience adhering to work schedules and timetables effectively.
- Open and adaptable to embracing new procedures within the department.
Desirable Attributes
- Experience working in roles with customer interaction.
- Knowledge of manual handling and moving techniques.
Additional Information
UHS Estates Limited is a wholly owned subsidiary of University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust, responsible for building design and maintenance services supporting one of England's major teaching hospitals. The team operates daily between 7am and 8pm, seven days a week, all year round.
