Position Summary

The Vice President, Controller will oversee all technical accounting tasks related to the company, ensuring timely and accurate preparation and review of financial statements and general ledger details to maintain compliance with GAAP principles. Leadership and Supervisory Duties

This position manages three to four supervisors who oversee 12-14 accounting personnel including accounts payable staff. Duties encompass recruitment, training, assigning work, performance evaluations, rewarding or disciplining employees, resolving conflicts, and coaching for professional development.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the monthly closing processes for all multifamily properties, ensuring journal entries, debt service and property tax payments, bank reconciliations, and financial statements are accurate and completed on time.
  • Deliver financial reports promptly to clients and senior management, analyze budget variances, and resolve discrepancies while addressing client inquiries concerning property financial performance.
  • Ensure secure and compliant banking activities with proper segregation of duties and internal controls.
  • Coordinate property tax appeal processes with asset managers and tax consultants.
  • Manage audits of property accounts by collaborating with audit and tax firms.
  • Ensure timely completion of lender compliance reports; communicate any issues to management promptly.
  • Oversee property onboarding and off-boarding including due diligence, closing statement reviews, bank account setup, Yardi system configurations, and proration adjustments.
  • Supervise retail accounting including rent billing, CAM budgets, and reconciliations.
  • Manage corporate accounts receivable reconciliations to ensure all miscellaneous income sources are billed and collected efficiently.
  • Contribute to budget and forecast preparation.
  • Prepare reports for regulatory bodies such as unclaimed property filings.
  • Identify efficiency opportunities, propose improvements, and implement enhanced procedures and tools.
  • Undertake other tasks as directed by senior management.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from a recognized four-year institution.
  • Minimum five to six years of relevant experience with demonstrated leadership in multifamily property management accounting departments, showing progressive responsibility.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Managerial Accountant (CMA) credentials preferred.
  • Possession of a California Real Estate License is favored.
  • Capability to maintain regular attendance and flexibility to work overtime if necessary.
  • Availability for occasional business travel for meetings, training, or other responsibilities.
  • Strong supervisory and management skills to lead, mentor, and evaluate teams and peers.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for explaining financial data to diverse stakeholders.

Compensation & Benefits

The annual salary range is $165,000 to $185,000. The compensation package includes a 401(k) match, rental discounts based on location, rental incentives, renewals bonuses, and other bonuses.
