About the Role
Join the Haematology and Blood Transfusion Laboratory at Torbay Hospital as a Specialist Biomedical Scientist. We seek a motivated and well-organized professional registered with HCPC and possessing the IBMS Specialist Portfolio to become part of our supportive Haematology & Blood Transfusion team.
The Trust invests in the continuous personal and professional growth of staff. Our department operates fully automated analytical platforms for Blood Transfusion (Immucor NEO Iris), Coagulation (Stago Star Max), Special Haematology (Sebia Capillarys 3 Tera), Haematology (Sysmex), and Immunology (Bioflash). We utilize the SafeTrace Tx Laboratory Information Management System along with Beaker following the installation of Epic. Successful candidates will rotate across laboratory sections and, after training, participate in a shift pattern covering nights and weekends.
Responsibilities
- Provide expert technical advice on haematology and transfusion medicine tests to laboratory, medical, nursing, and other healthcare professionals within defined limits.
- Operate and maintain laboratory equipment according to manufacturer instructions and regulatory standards such as HCPC and UKAS, including troubleshooting and resolving issues.
- Supervise and train trainees and support personnel.
- Mentor junior scientific and support staff.
- Undertake specialist roles including training, quality assurance, special coagulation, sickle cell and thalassaemia screening, and blood transfusion management.
- Adhere to quality standards set by UKAS, ISO 15189, and other accreditation bodies.
- Lead service improvement initiatives by facilitating positive change and contributing constructively to team discussions.
- Collaborate with laboratory staff to optimize patient outcomes.
- Lead and manage laboratory sections in the absence of the section manager when required.
- Serve as a role model in a multidisciplinary environment, valuing diverse opinions and experiences.
- Show respect for individual differences and promote inclusivity.
Additional Information
The team comprises 17 Biomedical Scientists alongside 2 Associate Practitioners and 2 Medical Laboratory Assistants. Staff up to band 7 frequently rotate between Blood Transfusion and Haematology. The department carries out a broad spectrum of tests including immunology and fully participates in the antenatal sickle cell and thalassaemia screening program.
