Role Overview

We are seeking a Software Engineer specializing in Java to join our distributed team working on CDRO (Continuous Delivery & Release Orchestration), an enterprise-grade continuous delivery product relied upon by major engineering organizations globally. This role involves working within a mature, complex product to modernize code and improve customer experience through Java 21 and Groovy technologies, leveraging AI-assisted engineering tools effectively.

Responsibilities

• Maintain and develop Java components including REST APIs, pipeline execution engines, and persistence layers.
• Continuously simplify and modernize legacy subsystems, reduce product complexity, and enhance test coverage to improve maintainability.
• Integrate AI-assisted coding tools such as Claude Code into daily workflows to accelerate development while maintaining thoughtfulness.
• Author thorough tests to ensure quality from the early stages rather than relying on downstream QA.
• Document implementations comprehensively to facilitate asynchronous collaboration across distant time zones.
• Prevent becoming a bottleneck by encouraging knowledge sharing and redundancy in code ownership.

Qualifications

• Proven experience working within established Java production codebases where system reliability is critical.
• Strong skills with relational databases including SQL, JPA/Hibernate, and schema migrations; experience with Oracle or PostgreSQL is advantageous.
• Adept at navigating and reasoning within large, mature codebases, forming hypotheses and verifying them effectively.
• Disciplined testing mindset; writing unit and integration tests as an integral part of development tasks.
• Transparent and honest communication especially regarding blockers or issues, supporting asynchronous and distributed teamwork.

Preferred Skills and Attributes

• Experience actively using AI coding assistance tools beyond simple autocompletion, with motivation to expand their use.
• Ability and willingness to quickly learn Groovy language.
• Familiarity with Kubernetes and Helm for deploying and troubleshooting workloads.
• Background in evolving long-standing systems through migrations, incremental code rewrites, and dependency updates.
• Knowledge of Jenkins or CI/CD system internals, distributed systems architecture including message brokers (ActiveMQ, Artemis, RabbitMQ), and coordination tools (Zookeeper).
• Comfortable with React and TypeScript for adjacent UI components.

Working Conditions

• Standard work hours are from 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, with possible adjustments based on business needs.
• The role is based in Chennai, India with a hybrid work model.
