Role overview
CubeSmart is looking for a Software Engineer to join its Information Technology team at the corporate office in Malvern, Pennsylvania. This is a hybrid position with three in-office days each week. The role focuses on designing, building, testing, and supporting the company’s enterprise store operating platform.
This opportunity is aimed at an early-career engineer with at least one year of professional software development experience who wants to strengthen technical skills, learn from experienced colleagues, and contribute to dependable, scalable software.

What you will do
- Build, test, troubleshoot, and maintain server-side and front-end features for CubeSmart applications.
- Work closely with engineers, product owners, business partners, and QA team members to translate needs into working solutions.
- Take part in sprint planning, daily standups, code reviews, and other agile activities.
- Produce clear, maintainable, and well-documented code in line with team standards and SDLC practices.
- Help investigate defects, monitor applications, and support production systems.
- Contribute to automated test coverage, including unit, integration, smoke, and regression testing.
- Use source control, development tools, and deployment workflows to help deliver software effectively.
- Build understanding of performance, scalability, privacy, security, and maintainability principles.
- Coordinate with both in-house and offshore teammates through clear, constructive communication.
- Join on-call support rotations when needed, with support from senior engineers.
What we are looking for
- At least 1 year of professional experience building, maintaining, or supporting web applications.
- Interest in continued learning and in using new technologies to create reliable, customer-focused software.
- Working knowledge of web application fundamentals such as HTTP, APIs, databases, testing, debugging, and version control.
- Experience with at least one modern programming language or framework, such as Ruby on Rails, JavaScript, React, Node.js, Python, or a comparable technology.
- Basic experience building or consuming APIs with JSON, REST, or OpenAPI.
- Comfort working with relational databases such as PostgreSQL, SQL Server, MySQL, or similar systems.
- Ability to use Git or another source control tool in a team setting.
- Basic command-line familiarity with Linux, macOS, or a similar environment.
- Exposure to automated testing methods such as unit testing, integration testing, TDD, or BDD.
- Strong problem-solving ability, with a willingness to ask good questions and learn quickly.
- Ability to work well with teammates, stakeholders, and cross-functional partners.
- Product-focused mindset with an interest in practical solutions, user experience, and business impact.
- Must be authorized to work in the U.S. without current or future sponsorship.
Preferred background
- Exposure to Ruby on Rails or interest in learning Ruby and Rails.
- Experience with JavaScript frameworks such as React or Node.js.
- Familiarity with cloud platforms, especially AWS.
- Exposure to containers, Kubernetes, GitOps, service mesh, or related cloud-native tools.
- Awareness of DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, Jenkins, or Infrastructure as Code.
- Experience with asynchronous messaging tools or patterns such as RabbitMQ or Kafka.
- Exposure to caching systems such as Redis.
- Familiarity with security concepts or protocols such as OAuth2, OIDC, SSL, SSH, SFTP, or LDAP.
- Experience with project tracking tools such as JIRA.
- Interest in learning technologies such as Rust, GraphQL, NoSQL databases, or graph databases.
