Position Summary
The Safety & Environmental Coordinator will help build, roll out, and oversee safety and environmental programs across Burgess Civil’s active construction projects. The position is essential to maintaining compliance with OSHA, FDOT, EPA, and internal standards, while also encouraging a strong safety-focused mindset on site. The right person will be practical, thorough, and comfortable advising field crews so work can be completed safely and efficiently.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out regular site inspections to spot hazards, review controls, and confirm compliance with company safety rules, OSHA requirements, and project specifications.
- Help put corrective measures in place and verify that identified safety issues are resolved.
- Assist with daily safety huddles, toolbox talks, and task-specific hazard reviews such as JHAs and PTPs.
- Support investigations involving incidents, near misses, property damage, and equipment-related events.
- Collect witness statements, record findings, take site photos, and help identify underlying causes.
- Coordinate tracking of corrective actions with safety leaders and project management.
- Check adherence to environmental rules covering erosion control, runoff management, fuel handling, spill prevention, waste disposal, and dust/noise reduction.
- Support environmental inspections, SWPPP paperwork, and BMP checks.
- Conduct safety orientations for new employees and subcontractors so they understand policies, PPE, hazards, and expectations.
- Help organize and track safety training, including OSHA, equipment certifications, confined space, fall protection, CPR/First Aid, and other required courses.
- Coach field staff and supervisors on safe work methods and compliance expectations.
- Keep precise records of incident reports, inspections, training logs, equipment certifications, and other safety documents.
- Assist in preparing weekly and monthly safety reports, metrics, and dashboards for management.
- Work closely with foremen and superintendents to address safety concerns quickly.
- Help strengthen a proactive safety culture through presence, communication, and teamwork.
- Check proper use, condition, and inspection of tools, equipment, ladders, trench boxes, traffic control devices, and PPE.
- Support inspections of equipment and vehicles in line with DOT, OSHA, and company requirements.
- Take on other duties as needed to support overall safety and environmental performance.
Required Qualifications
- 1 to 3 years of experience in construction safety, environmental compliance, or a similar field.
- Working knowledge of OSHA construction standards (29 CFR 1926).
- Strong communication abilities and the capacity to coach and influence field teams.
- Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel regularly to job sites.
- Comfortable using Microsoft Office tools such as Word, Excel, and Teams, and able to learn safety software or mobile applications.
Preferred Qualifications
- OSHA 30-Hour Construction certification, or the ability to earn it within 6 months.
- Background in civil or heavy construction, such as earthwork, utilities, or roadway work.
- Exposure to SWPPP, BMPs, erosion and sediment control, and environmental compliance practices.
- First Aid/CPR/AED certification.
- Bilingual English/Spanish skills are a strong advantage.
